Wimbledon Women’s R16 Monday Picks and Pans

This could go any of 10 ways between on one end a knock-down big-hitter between the two powerhouses, or on the other end a chokefest between Venus who doesn’t want to ruin sister Serena’s shot at a Grand Slam, to Serena choking it while Venus is trying to hand it to her.

Bencic, Istomin 1st Time Title Winners Entering Wimbledon

Denis Istomin at the grasscourt event in Nottingham became the first player ever from Uzbekistan to win an ATP World Tour title, on Saturday edging American Sam Querrey 7-6(1), 7-6(6).

ATP/WTA Previews: Nadal Helps Debut Stuttgart Grass Event

Notes: The tournament makes the switch to grass as part of the tour’s extended grasscourt season…Tough starts for (1) Nadal against the Baghdatis-Rosol winner, and (8) Troicki vs. Coric…Wildcards went to Germans Tommy Haas, Maximilian Marterer and Alexander Zverev…Pulling from the event were Julien Benneteau and Jiri Vesely…The Bryan brothers are the top seeds in doubles…Nadal (2007,’05) is the lone returning former champ in the field.

Former No. 1s Fall Monday; Serena vs. Sloane on Tuesday at Indian Wells

“I actually didn’t feel like I played my best tennis,” said Sharapova, who will next face the defending champion Flavia Pennetta. “But I was competitive. I was there. I feel like I did everything I had to do in order to win the match, which is sometimes the most important thing.”

Indian Wells Women’s Preview: Serena Williams Returns to Cushy Draw

All the hubbub surrounds Serena, but Venus is not ending her boycott since last playing in 2001. “I made my schedule up,” Venus said about missing IW again. “I’m entered in Miami, and that’s pretty much what it is. I haven’t really given a lot of thought to it. I have just been focusing on this year…I just respect every decision [Serena] makes, pretty much. It’s nothing complicated about it.”
