Sharapova Exits Second Round at Wimbledon
“Losses are tough — more here than at any other tournament,” said Sharapova, who with a slow-healing surgically-repaired shoulder chucked in seven double faults in the second set alone. “I would have liked to have a longer season before coming here…It took me a while to get going. It’s a little too late to start picking yourself up when you’re down a set and 3-love.”

Schnyder, Wozniak Seeds Out at Wimbledon; Day 2 Schedule
Japanese veteran Ai Sugiyama topped No. 24 seed Patty Schnyder 6-4, 6-4, and Italian veteran Francesca Schiavone outlasted No. 23 seed Aleksandra Wozniak 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Becker, Tursunov, Woz Win Titles; Wimbledon Next
No. 6-seeded Dane Caroline Wozniacki won the women’s title for her fifth of the year, beating unseeded Frenchwoman Virginie Razzano 7-6(5), 7-5. It was the career-first grasscourt title for Wozniacki, who further shored-up her Top 10 status. “It’s my first title on grass so that means a lot to me. I’ve beaten some great players, some great grasscourt players,” Wozniacki said. “This tournament had a very strong field.” Razzano toppled the top-seeded Elena Dementieva en route to the final.

Confusion on Women’s Side Kicks Off 2009 Wimbledon
Wimbledon begins Monday at the All England Club featuring a new roof and a lot of confusion on the women’s side, where no one seems to ready to step up and take the champion’s mantle in the absence of Justine Henin, who abruptly retired last year.

Sharapova v American Glatch Wednesday at WTA Birmingham
Glatch is quickly rising into the “next American to watch” (and there aren’t many) on the women’s side after a stunning Fed Cup debut where she notched two singles victories to propel the U.S. team to a 3-2 victory over the Czech Republic, putting the U.S. in the Fed Cup final.

Unseeded Sharapova Favorite on WTA Birmingham Grasscourts
“The one thing I’ve always said about ranking is I think numbers never lie,” Sharapova said following her French Open effort. “They always reflect on your performance and what you’ve achieved. But taking that aside, I think no matter if you’re ranked No. 1 or No. 100, it takes just as much work to get there.”
