Wozniacki, Clijsters, 7 of Top 10 in Sydney; Hobart; WTA Previews

The list of floaters almost as impressive as the seed list; tough openers include Kirilenko vs. Cibulkova (winner to face (1) Wozniacki), (5) Schiavone vs. Kleybanova (winner to likely face Hantuchova), possible (3) Clijsters vs. Petrova 2nd rd., former world No. 2 Kuznetova vs. (WC) Dokic, winner to face (4) Stosur vs. Wickmayer winner, (6) Jankovic vs. Rezai, and (2) Zvonareva vs. winner of Pennetta vs. qualifier; 7 of the Top 10 players present in Sydney; Elena Dementieva (now retired) beat Serena Williams (now injured) in the 2010 final…Clijsters (2007, ’03) is the lone returning champ in the field, in addition to the 2008-05 runner-ups Kuznetsova (2008), Jankovic (2007), Schiavone (2006), and Stosur (2005); 11 former No. 1 players have won the Sydney title.

Too Much Too Soon for Rookie as U.S. Loses Fed Cup Final to Italy

Fernandez took a chance on Vandeweghe after a reportedly bad practice week from Melanie Oudin. Oudin has had a down year since her quarterfinal breakthrough at the US Open last year. Fernandez benched Oudin on Saturday, then on Sunday Oudin showed her veteran composure by not only upsetting Top 10er Francesca Schiavone but blowing out the Italian, allowing her only four games.

U.S. Down 0-2 After Mattek-Sands Loss in Fed Cup Final

U.S. Fed Cup Captain Mary Joe Fernandez will have to choose between the overwhelmed Coco Vanderweghe and Melanie Oudin, who was benched from the first day for a poor practice week, in the first match on Sunday.

U.S. Women’s Tennis Fan Alert: Struggling Display at WTA Quebec City

They joined Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Melanie Oudin who made it into the quarters on Wednesday. Mattek-Sands is a grinder mostly known for her knee-high socks, and Oudin with her small-ball game has seemingly already had her 15 minutes of fame last year at the US Open.

Azarenka Faints Out of US Open; Oudin’s Year of Fame Ends

“I was checked by the medical team before I went on court and they were courtside for monitoring,” Azarenka said. “I felt worse as the match went on, having a headache and feeling dizzy.”

US Open Opens with Pressure on Oudin; Federer v Nadal Looming?

The men’s side of the draw is without injured champion Juan Martin del Potro, but 2009 runner-up Roger Federer is announcing his intentions, and will open Monday against Argentina’s Brian Dabul.

Wozniacki will open against the winner of Oudin and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova; (7) Pennetta a tough start against Kleybanova; the French Open champ (3) Schiavone starts against former No. 1 (WC) Safina; (2) Stosur will likely start against the tough Zheng; tournament started in 1948 as the U.S. Women’s Hardcourt Championships; Wozniacki is the two-time defending champion.

Jankovic Headlines; Only 1 American Direct Entry at WTA Cincinnati

The sadly-slowing American drumbeat goes on this week at the Western & Southern Financial Group Women’s Open. World No. 1 Serena Williams is sidelined with a cut foot, and elder sister Venus is out with a tweaked knee. No Americans are seeded, and only one American, Melanie Oudin, got directly into the main draw via her ranking (barely).

U.S. Comes From Behind to Defeat Russia, Gain Fed Cup Final

On the opening day Saturday Melanie Oudin defeated Kudryavtseva, then the Russian Dementieva evening the tie at 1-1 with a straight-set win over Mattek-Sands. On Sunday in the opener Oudin failed to match her heroics at the US Open where she defeated Dementieva, falling to the Russian despite winning the second set 6-0.
