Rafter Beats Courier, Awaits Sampras in Seniors Los Cabos Final

Playing in his debut tournament on the Outback Champions Series, Rafter used his trademark serve and volley game on the hard courts of the Palmilla Tennis Club to dictate play and set up a possible final-round showdown with Pete Sampras, his top rival during his ATP career. Sampras will play Mats Wilander of Sweden in the tournament’s other semifinal on Saturday.

Fish Snaps at San Jose Winner Stepanek; Sampras Beats McEnroe

“John McEnroe turns 50 tomorrow — it’s incredible how well this guy still plays,” Sampras said following the match. “I’m in awe of it actually. At 50, it’s amazing to move that well. It’s pretty incredible.” McEnroe beat Sampras last year en route to the Boston title. Todd Martin won the third-place match when Jim Courier pulled out with a bad back.

The Stability Factor, Roger Federer and Greatness

Having Roger Federer’s number is really nice, but it does not do Murray much good if he cannot win the five or six consecutive matches he needs to in order to face Federer. For Murray to reach #1 or to even distance himself from his promising contemporaries, he has to reign in his emotions and develop stability.
