Last year Nadal broke Ferrer’s three-year hold on the event, beating Monaco in the final…Pulling from the event were Aljaz Bedene, Andreas “Don’t Be A” Haider-Maurer, and Jack Sock…Spaniards have won the singles title for the last seven years…The title-less Nadal is trying to repeat last year when he won his first title of the year in Buenos Aires…Former champs in the field are Nadal (2015), Ferrer (2014-12), Almagro (2011), and Monaco (2007).

Tough starts for (1) Venus in the 2nd rd. vs. the Bastad runner-up Barthel, (4) Cornet vs. Wickmayer, (5) Giorgi vs. Cibulkova, and (2) Svitolina vs. Rybarikova…Veterans Daniela Hantuchova and Francesca Schiavone also floating around…Wildcards went to Turkey’s Cagla Buyukakcay and Ipek Soylu, and the No. 4 seed Cornet…Pulling from the event were Belinda Bencic, Alexandra Dulgheru, Kristina Mladenovic, Monica Niculescu and Flavia Pennetta…Top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki beat No. 2 Roberta Vinci in last year’s final…Pavlyuchenkova (2010) is the lone returning former champ in the field.

Federer, Murray Complete Top Dogs in R16 Saturday at Wimbledon

“The shoulder is fine,” said Murray. “You could probably see towards the end of the second set it was starting to tighten up and it cooled down as he took his injury timeout. I struggled a little bit in the second set but I was playing very aggressively at the end and finished the match as I want to go on.”

Ailing Nadal Escapes American Smyczek in 5 on Upset Day at Aussie Open

“I felt, I don’t know,” Nadal said. “At the end of the first set, I start to feel my body very bad, very tired…I was worrying crazy. Then when I was serving for the third, almost throw up…I suffered too much on court for three hours and a half. I was suffering a lot. Too much. You know, was not funny today the way that the match was. Obviously is a very positive thing that finally have the chance to win, but, yeah, I hope to recover myself.”
