Notes: Will Isner pull out after his draining run in Cincinnati? Probably…Not a lot of floating talent, and all 16 seeds receive first-round byes…Potentially tough opening-round match-ups for seeds after byes include (11) Nieminen vs. (WC) Fish, (9) Melzer vs. the rising Dutchman Sijsling, and (5) Paire vs. Blake…Other wildcards went to Berdych, Spain’s Fernando “Hot Sauce” Verdasco, and Belgian Romain Bogaerts…Pulling from the event were Carlos Berlocq, Nikolay Davydenko, Marcel Granollers, Tommy Haas, Albert Ramos, the doping-suspended Viktor Troicki, and Horacio Zeballos…Isner is the two-time defending champion, last year beating Berdych in the final.

Notes: Isner beat Hewitt in last year’s final…The former Wimbledon champ Hewitt has failed to raise the Newport trophy in two career appearances so far…15-year-old Stefan “Baby Santoro” Kozlov of Florida receives a wildcard and meets Poland’s Michal Prezysiezny first round…Karlovic is making his first appearance since being sidelined with viral meningitis in April…Tough starts for (1) Querrey vs. Mahut likely in 2nd rd., (6) Matosevic vs. Sock, (5) Roger-Vasselin vs. Karlovic, and (2) Isner vs. Harrison (winner to meet Blake or Adrian Mannarino who went deep at Wimbledon)…Hewitt has not won an ATP title since 2010…Querrey was runner-up in 2009…Blake was a finalist in 2002, and has not made an appearance in Newport since 2005…Three other players (Fabrice Santoro 2008-07, Greg Rusedski 2005-04, Bryan Shelton 1992-91) have won back-to-back titles since the tournament became an ATP event in 1976, and this week Isner will attempt to become the first player ever to win three in a row…Former champs in the field are Isner (2012-11) and fellow American Rajeev Ram (2009).

“I started to feel pain, like a knife below my ribs,” said Errani who struggled with an odd injury during the match. “Every time I was breathing it was very painful. It wasn’t muscular, but I couldn’t stay up. So I called the physio and she told me I had my diaphragm totally blocked. She tried to release it a bit, and then after that it was much better.”

Notes: Insane field with two former No. 1s and an additional Slam champ all unseeded…The Top 3 seeds are current or former No. 1s…Tough opening-round matches are (5) Na vs. Tamira Paszek then the winner of Venus and (WC) Medina Garrigues, (3) Azarenka vs. Pavlyuchenkova, (11) Petrova vs. a qualifier then likely Kuznetsova, (16) Ivanovic vs. a qualifier then likely her Serb countrywoman Jankovic, (9) Stosur vs. the clay-savvy Suarez Navarro, and (2) Sharapova vs. a qualifier then likely Peng…No blue clay this year…Former champs in the field are Serena Williams (2012) and Kvitova (2011).

“She’s amazing. We were joking that she’s like a soldier,” Vesnina said of Makarova. “She has a bleeding knee and she won such an amazing match — one of the most emotional matches she has won. And then in the doubles, she was feeling tired, but she’s a great fighter.”
