Notes: Three former No. 1s among the seeds…No Williams sisters but plenty of Top 10ers and floaters…The Top 4 seeds receive opening-round byes…Tough openers for (1) Azarenka after a bye against Pennetta or Schiavone, (4) Vinci after a bye likely against the veteran Mattek-Sands, (7) Ivanovic vs. Cibulkova, (5) Stosur vs. the rolling Lepchenko, and (2) Radwanska after a bye likely vs. the veteran Hantuchova…Wildcards went to American Allie Kiick, France’s Virginie Razzano, and Stosur…Pulling from the event were Marion Bartoli, Kirsten Flipkens, Bojana Jovanovski, Kristina Mladenovic and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova…Martina Hingis and Hantuchova received a wildcard in doubles…Cibulkova beat Bartoli in the final last year…Returning champions in the field are Cibulkova (2012), Radwanska (2011), and Kuznetsova (2010).

Cloaking herself in a calm yet angry demeanor after losing the first set, the world No. 1 won nine of the next 10 games before Lisicki upped her game trailing 0-3 in the third, and Serena became a little more defensive. Lisicki closed it out on her second match point to end the American’s 34-match winning streak in 2013.

“It was a fantastic match,” Djokovic said. “I felt great from the start ’til the end. I had that super focus and tried to be out there every point and not allow him to come back in the match or to have any chances. I saw the stats that I won 100 percent of first serves and I served over 80 percent of serves in in the whole match. That was incredible for me. I enjoyed every moment of it, especially at the end…This kind of performance came in the right time for me.”

Third edition of the tournament takes place at the Royal Primerose Tennis Club in Brussels…wildcards went to Brit Elena Baltacha, Belgiuan Alison Van Uytvanck, and the top seed Wozniacki…Pulling from the event were Irina-Camelia Begu, Simona Halep, Kristina Mladenovic, Ayumi Morita and Aggie Radwanska…Radwanska beat Halep in last year’s final…The country that produced recent No. 1s Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin now has no players in the Top 20 and only two in the Top 100…Interesting qualifying field contains former world No. 1 junior Taylor Townsend, Shahar Peer and former US Open sensation Melanie Oudin…Wozniacki (2011) is the lone returning former champ in the field.
