2011 Australian Open TV Schedule
The season’s first Grand Slam, the 2011 Australian Open, gets underway on Monday in Melbourne. Here in the US, the Australian Open TV scheduled coverage begins live on Sunday via ESPN2 with Tennis Channel starting their broadcast Monday. ADHEREL
ESPN2 will air a record 124 hours of live coverage plus another 50 hours in tape delay starting 7pm ET live with first ball, first round coverage. The ESPN3.com live streaming internet site will stream 600 hours of Australian Open featuring seven courts available on demand. Both channels will have the men’s and women’s semifinals and finals live on TV and streamed on internet.
ESPN has televised the Australian Open since 1984 (there was no event in 1986), the French Open since 2002 (and 1986 – 1993), Wimbledon since 2003 and the US Open since 2009.
Last September, the network and the Australian Open reached a 10-year extension from 2012 through 2021 for broadcast rights.
The 2011 ESPN2 commentary team in Australia includes Cliff Drysdale, Dick Enberg, Chris Fowler, Chris McKendry, Darren Cahill, Mary Joe Fernandez, Brad Gilbert, Pam Shriver, Tom Rinaldi and Patrick McEnroe. Mary Carillo is no longer with the ESPN2 tennis team.
Tennis Channel will again offer a live two hour block nearly every evening (7pm-9pm ET) from the start of play in Australia before ESPN2 takes over. Tennis Channel has about 30 hours of live match play on their two-week Australian Open schedule along with 75 hours of the daily morning show “Australian Open Today”. Their live coverage includes the singles quarterfinals, doubles championships and mixed doubles final.
The Tennis Channel talent team includes Martina Navratilova, Lindsay Davenport, Justin Gimelstob, Leif Shiras and Bill Macatee.
