World No. 1 Serena Williams appeared on the David Letterman on CBS show last night. Serena was asked by Letterman about the comparison between women’s tennis and men’s tennis, and how she would do against Andy Murray who talked about such a challenge match in June.

“If I were to play Andy Murray I would lose 60, 60 in five to six minutes, maybe 10 minutes,” said Serena. “No, it’s true. It’s a completely different sport.

“I only want to play girls because I don’t want to be embarrassed,” she added. “I would not do the tour, I would not do Billie Jean any disservice. So Andy, stop it. I’m not going to let you kill me.”

James Says:

I’m sure she can win a couple of games vs Andy if she was serving well. But she’s right she has no chance against Murray or any male player in top 100. Andy might let her win more than 4 games though just to make it interesting.

Ben Pronin Says:

James, Murray would not lose any games to her. Like she said, it’s a completely different sport. Just ask Karsten Braasch.

James Says:

Sure, Ben, if Andy’s dead serious then Serena isn’t gonna win a single game. Maybe just a few points with serve like an ace. But maybe Andy would take it easy on her knowing he can beat her even if he’s 0-5 down in a set.
I’ve played with some female friends and it’s always just for fun. Even when I try to serve slow they think it’s too fast! Most of the times I just serve underarm. And a lot of times let them win;)

Brando Says:

Yep agree with Ben: she’d win not one mere game. As serena say’s herself it really is a different sport. That said, I have to say that after Pete Sampras I think Serena possesses the greatest serve I have ever seen from a truly great player. Like Pete: her 2nd serve is more than good enough to produce a ace on the big points.

Smart girl.

roy Says:

she’s only saying this out of false modesty and because murray is top 4.
guarantee she believes she can compete with male professional players further down the ladder.
that’s what falsely empowered females do.
they live in fantasy land.

college male players would destroy her.
decent club male players would win comfortably.

the difference between males and females in physical and athletic ability is staggering.

Jatin Says:

Its obvious.

Tennis x Hippy Chic Says:

Usually love the way she dresses, but im not so keen on this dress, but i love those shoes though, and she has lovely long curly hair too.

autoFilter Says:

What “females do”? Really?

Anyway, I am not a fan of Serena, but on what basis is she “falsely empowered”? She’s transcended cultural boundaries to ultimately dominate her chosen field to the point that the vast majority of knowledgeable tennis fans and commentators (including some of her most accomplished predecessors) consider her at least one of the greatest to ever play women’s tennis. I’d say that’s pretty legitimately empowered.

Lulu Says:

roy,

I guarantee that I, a female, possess amazing “physical capabilities” that no man can match!

Have to agree with Serena that Andy would destroy her though.

Perfect fan Says:

I hope I m not exaggerating..but I strongly believe, Serena (on grass) could make it real tight against couple of atp guys..may be even serve on to win a odd match too.

Steve 27 Says:

I would like to watch Serena against Jimmy Connors with Sharapova in the crowd.

Eric Says:

That seems like an exaggeration. Serena really thinks she couldn’t win a single game against Andy? It would be a drubbing, but I doubt it’d be 6-0, 6-0.
