Tomas Berdych has hired a new coach. After swinging and missing on Ivan Lendl, Berdych tapped another one of Andy Murray’s men in former coach/hitting partner Dani Vallverdu.

“Dear fans my new coach for 2015 will be Danny Vallverdu and Azuz Simcich.Thank you to Tomas Krupa and David Vydra for great time together!” Berdych wrote on twitter.

Vallverdu, 28, worked with Murray starting in 2010 until this fall when Amelie Mauresmo was retained for another year. A native of Venezuela, Vallverdu played collegiate tennis at Miami and was on Murray’s team when he won his two Slams and the Olympics.

Can Vallverdu help the 29-year-old Berdych to Grand Slam glory?

Hippy Chick Says:

Tomas has been a consistent member of the top 10 for years,he has alot of talent no doubt about it,but lacks something between the ears, and folds like a cheap suit against the top players,i wonder if a new coach with some fresh ideas will help him find that missing ingredient needed to make that step and win a GS,time will only tell?….

Giles Says:

This is the closest he will get to Lendl IMO

Dan the Man Says:

Berdych has great physical talent, but his biggest downside is mental. He has lost so many matches choking, especially when serving – the double faults start coming out. He could win something big if he can win matches easily. His mental is the most important to improve his chances

SG1 Says:

Who is Dani Vallverdu? Seems to be Romanian but beyond that, I have never heard of this person.

SG1 Says:

Thanks Wikipedia…OK…Venezuelan. Wouldn’t have guessed it with that last name. Former Murray coach and Lendl protege. Guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens and if he can clear the fog out of Berdy’s brain. I have my doubts.

jane Says:

it seems late, but you never know. look what stan has done under soderling’s former coach.

Hippy Chick Says:

Not really a Berdych fan ,but i really think it would be great to see another player making a breakthrough, just to make things more interesting at the top, although im not entirely sure how realistic it is at this point?….

RZ Says:

Dani may help Berdych with stamina and being able to last through tournaments longer. Not sure what else he can do. He did good work with Murray but without Lendl wasn’t able to get him over that final hurdle.

bigtennisfan Says:

did anyone say why Lendl said no to coaching Berdych?

Margot Says:

Am quite shocked by this news. It’s going to be weird watching Andy play Berd.
Am inclined to agree with Giles actually. Tho Dani wanted to be Andy’s head coach so Ivan would only be hired part time, which would suit him.
@SG
Andy and Dani go back years, first met as teenagers in Barcelona.

the DA Says:

“did anyone say why Lendl said no to coaching Berdych?”

Lendl didn’t want to commit to the amount of time & travel which Berdy wanted. And that wasn’t even considered full time, he said no to 24 weeks. Maybe Berdy thinks in the back of his mind that hiring Dani is a gateway to Lendl.

Time to junk those gypsy costumes and send back the crystal balls!

Okiegal Says:

Thanks, Colin, and hello……been awhile. I did have the gut feeling, but also said on a post on another thread that I felt like Ivan would do it. So I wasn’t on the ball with that one….but half right!! LOL

Okiegal Says:

@Colin…..your post reminded of a song….”Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves”…..la la la la la ….sung by the lovely Cher! Loved it!

Hippy Chick Says:

Okiegal before she had all that plastic surgery….

Okiegal Says:

@Chick…….grrr I think face lifts are creepy! Yes, you are right. She was prettier before the knife……grow old gracefully celebrity people! Some of the face lifted people end up looking like ducks and chipmunks, imo….

Brando GOAT Poster Says:

He needs a psychologist, a shrink not a coach.

His problems have always been and will remain upstairs not with his game since barring movement and return he’s as good as it gets in most department.

Matador Says:

A mental midget will be a mental midget.
Waste of talent this Berdych.

Matador Says:

A mental midget will be always a mental midget
