Andy Murray added a new member to his team today, hiring former Top 5 Jonas Bjorkman on a trial basis as an assistant coach.

The 42-year-old Bjorkman who reached a career high No. 4 in 1997, confirmed the moved on his Instagram account.

“I’m super excited and I’m really looking forward to join @andymurray and his team for a test week, which we both hope will lead to joining the team permanently!” Bjorkman wrote.

This month a year ago, Murray and Ivan Lendl parted ways. Will Bjorkman be the next in line after Amelie Mauresmo?

jane Says:

interesting pairing. i remember bjorkman was quite a character later on in his career. not surprised to read he’s been dancing. ha ha.

RZ Says:

I like Bjorkman. I hope this works out for Team Murray.

SG1 Says:

I think I like what Bjorkman could bring to Andy’s game. Sort of what Edberg has done with Federer. But, my impression is that sometimes, Andy needs a bit of a kick in the you know what. Lendl was a no nonsense guy. Can Bjorkman be tough on Andy and will Andy respond to it? It’s tough to tell a 19 time GS finalist and 8 time slam winner that he’s off his rocker. Bjorkman doesn’t have that kind of tennis pedigree. To me, Wilander is the right guy. Right country, wrong Swede…IMHO.

Sean Randall Says:

So the experiment with Mauresmo isn’t working then.

RZ Says:

@Sean – Mauresmo is still Andy’s first coach. Bjorkman was hired as an assistant coach and someone to travel when Mauresmo is not with Andy. She’s only going to travel with him about half the year.

Sean Randall Says:

RZ, exactly. Andy wants someone with him fulltime. Since Mauresmo can’t do it maybe Bjorkman will. As Bjorkman said, he wants to join the team “permanently”.

Ben Pronin Says:

Maybe Mauresmo was trying to pull a Chip Kelly and trade away her whole roster? I imagine that wouldn’t sit well with Andy…

Margot Says:

Whoaaaa!
Amelie replaced Ivan. Jonas replaces Dani.
All clear now?

RZ Says:

@Sean – “permanently” doesn’t mean every week of the year. It means no longer being on as part of a trial. I agree with Margot’s interpretation of events.

Giles Says:

Wonder why Andy chose this guy!

Hippy Chick Says:

I hope this is fruitful, would love to see Andy getting back into the winners circle and bagging a GS again this year, also pleased about the IW draw,no possibility of an Andole final, hope they are on opposite sides of the draw in some tournies for a while….

the DA Says:

I can’t believe people don’t understand the situation. Amelie filled the Ivan vacancy, Bjorkman fills the Dani vacancy. It’s not complicated. Also, it’s a one week trial -nothing concrete yet. Sheesh.

jane Says:

“hope they are on opposite sides of the draw in some tournies for a while”

me too.

“pleased about the IW draw”

this contradicts what you said above, because they are on the same side at IW.

Hippy Chick Says:

^Meant on the same side of the draw Jane, slip of the virtual tongue, sorry that i dont share your enthuiasm for another possible Andy/Novak final with another Andy beatdown, and yeas i know they have been close matches, but that aint no substitute for actual wins, well not for me it isnt anyway, and yes i am bitter about this rivalry as im rather sick of Andy been RU and second fiddle to Novak, and the rivalry if you can actually call it that now, which of late has become rather one sided IMO^….

Hippy Chick Says:

As for the IW draw yeah its fine,Novak is head and shoulders above anyone else on HCs anyway,so is my pick for the final and title, unless Fed does a Dubia repeat,or Andy/Rafa catch fire,or Stan blows hot instead of cold, which he has done alot lately….

Hippy Chick Says:

BTW Im enjoying having a good debate, and not just disagreeing for the sheer hell of it,i cant keep aplogizing for expressing my opinion, after all nobody else here does,so why should i?….

Hippy Chick Says:

^Should say agreeing or disagreeing for the sake of it^….

jane Says:

“i am bitter about this rivalry as im rather sick of Andy been RU and second fiddle to Novak”

how do you feel about rafa / andy rivalry? also bitter? or happy? or …?

yeah; i thought you meant “same” not opposite in that comment, but just thought i’d clarify.

Giles Says:

A one week trial period seems to be neither here nor there. What do they hope to achieve in one week? #Andy/Bjorkman

Hippy Chick Says:

Jane weve had this discussion before,Andy and Rafa aint met much lately,as i said with Rafa been my favorite and Andy been my second it doesnt bother me as much as im in a win/win situation no matter what, not that they have ever met in a GS though or likely to,so im not bitter about that rivalry like i am with the Andole one for obvious reasons OK that probably sounds like a double standard,i am human and just been honest here,in that i dont have much enthuisam for another Murray/Djokovic final be it a GS or other tourney anymore sorry….

jane Says:

“not that they have ever met in a GS though ” –

rafa/andy have met in all the grand slams, 9 times in fact, but andy’s repeatedly been on the losing end. he does have 2 wins: 2008 us open, over 2 days, and 2010 aus open, rafa retired when andy was up 2 sets with a break in the 3rd.

but i can totally see how it’s win/win since rafa’s your top fave.

Colin Says:

For those who criticise Mauresmo for not spending more time with Andy – I just read that she is with him more than Lendl was!

Hippy Chick Says:

Jane they havent ever met in a GS final though and its most unlikely that they never will, but i think youve missed my point anyway,Novak is your favorite so you will most likely love the match up and possibility of them meeting in a final as Andy is Noles pigeon what fan wouldnt?,hes not really a threat to Nole, and as Daniel once said its easy to be nice about another player when your favorite has there number although he was reffering to the Rafa/Andy rivalry and not the Murray/Djokovic rivalry but IMO its the same thing, and Andy playing Novak close at the AO,or in other matches 7/6,6/7,6/4 etc,and hereing hard luck stories aint no substitute for actually winning a match, hell i think id prefer to win a match playing crap, than playing well and still losing and recieving yet another patronizing pat on the back sorry….

Hippy Chick Says:

^Calmdownplease also doesnt particulaly care for this possibility of a Murray/Djokovic final, niether does Tennis Vagabond,or Steve-O,to name a couple, some of us actually dont, but for some reason that concept is lost on some people^….

Giles Says:

^^ Toooo borrrrrrring!!

Hippy Chick Says:

Giles sorry if you found it boring,i dont know if you meant that Novak/Andy rivalry or my posts, anyway i was trying to get my point across to Jane,if you find it boring dont read, its entirely your choice?….

jane Says:

hippy, why is it likely rafa/andy will never meet in a slam final? if they’ve met already 9 times at slams, why not in a final at some point?

as for the situation with nole, you seem to forget that until last year, when andy was coming back from surgery, they were 11-8 h2h. nole has added 5 wins only in the last year.

so no, andy is not nole’s pigeon. in fact, they are 3-2 in slam finals.

compare that to nadal and andy, where nadal is 7-2 over andy in the slams, and 15-5 overall with nadal having a 75% domination. if andy’s one of their “pigeons” it’s rafa. but since he’s your top fav, it’s win/win.

Hippy Chick Says:

Jane its all a very different scenario, the difference is Andy/Rafa havent contested a title since Japan open in 2011,and have never actually contested a GS final, and i just dont think its likely either although time will tell, and they never met at all in 2013,but met a couple of times last year, however side stepping that the point im making is after so many defeats Andy has suffered lately from Novak, and 3 at the same GS id rather not see a possiblity of another final between the two at least not for a while, semis yeah no problem,it might not go down very well with you or some others, but its the way i feel, and im entitled to feel the way i feel right?….

KatH Says:

@ SG1 – Me thinks Murray is a 9 slam winner – not that it really changes anything you said…

jane Says:

of course, hippy. just pointing out some facts is all. we’ll see how it goes the next time nadal/andy play, but frankly, i’d rather watch tough contests between andy and nole, than another match between rafa/andy at the FO, for example. i’d like to see them play again so we can see where they’re at! indeed, i was hoping we’d see it at the AO when andy was clearly in form. but rafa lost to berdych instead.

Giles Says:

HC. I was referring to the Andy/joker matches being borrrrring, and I too would like to see Andy beating him!

Hippy Chick Says:

Jane fair enough, but i would rather they didnt meet for a while especially if its a final,a loss for my favorite is still a loss for my favorite, and it doesnt matter whether its a close match 7/6,7/6,7/6 or 6/1,6/1,6/0 beatdown, and the FO is merely one tournament,as opposed to all the RU Andy has against Novak lately….

Hippy Chick Says:

Just supposing Andy gets a number of wins and the rivalry goes drastically in his favour, unlikely as that might seem right now,im just wondering call me cynical, but would Novaks fans be so nice about Andy, and love the rivalry/match up and the possibility of a final between the two then, like i say its easy to be that nice when everythings going in your favour, but quite different when the boots on the other foot, the last time Andy beat Novak at W there was indeed some Novak fans that turned on him if i remember rightly?….

Hippy Chick Says:

Giles me too,and thanks for the clarifiation….

jane Says:

“as opposed to all the RU Andy has against Novak lately” … um, you mean 1? he’s played in only 1 final with nole since he won wimbledon. i think your perception of their rivalry doesn’t always take into consideration the facts, that’s all. we all have our emotional favs and our preference of styles for sure. but the facts are there.

SG1 Says:

KatH Says:
@ SG1 – Me thinks Murray is a 9 slam winner – not that it really changes anything you said…

—————-

So getting Kim Sears to marry him is worth 7 slams? OK. I’m on board with that.

Hippy Chick Says:

Jane the facts are there, and i get your point, but im not sure your getting mine, just read my post@11.57am….

Margot Says:

Lol KatH, whatever you’re drinking, I’d like some…;)
