Ivan Lendl Apparently Declined Coaching Grigor Dimitrov

Rumors were flying last month when Ivan Lendl worked out with Grigor Dimitrov in Miami. But the tennis legend will not be coaching the talented Bulgarian anytime soon, according to reports.

Lendl apparently told Dimitrov that he couldn’t commit the necessary time to work with Dimitrov.

Lendl said as much the same to Tomas Berdych last year.

Dimitrov has been without a coaching since splitting with Roger Rasheed last month.

Giles Says:

I guess Lendl was afraid of Margot’s wrath had he accepted the coaching position. 😫
Only j/k Margot. 😛

RZ Says:

No surprise here.

Matt Says:

Wish we could hear the decision making there. Does he really not want to travel (commit the time) or does he just not quite believe Dimitrov has the ability to commit himself? He does have a nice game, but seems to lack that maturity.

sienna Says:

no surprises and it only reenforces the fact that lendl was unpleased with Murrays attitude because thats why he dismissed Grigor.

Margot Says:

Well, colour me gobsmacked at this (non) news. Didn’t I tell yo all, “I’d believe it when I saw it.”
Lol Giles, I really wish I was that powerful. Man, the things I’d do.

Jock-KatH Says:

Giles: If the j/k means me – I was preparing to be p….off.

I guess we’ve all read various articles re. Lendl recently – what interested me most was how he stated that he told Andy that because of home affairs (which he explained in full) he could not/would not be able to give more than 20% of his time to travel/coaching. If Andy could find a way to accept that, then fine.

He was positive about Vallerdu and positive that Grigor was a potential top player.

Giles Says:

JKath. What are you talking about? J/K = joking! Nought to do with you. Lol

Margot Says:

@Kat
Giles was “talking” to me I believe, and it’s short for “only joking.”

Jock-KatH Says:

Oh Margo, what a giggle! Too much shorthand too little long-hand. Maybe I’ll have to change my name again or I’ll never know if it is a joke or an inclusion!

PS: Assume you saw the article (or similar) to which I referred.

Lendl was a big positive in Murray’s turnaround, but it always was limited by Lendl’s many other commitments, businesses he is into.
I think that the best many players can hope for is a CONSULT contract with a superstar like Lendl, or a Sampras. Not “8 months of life on the road”. Many Vets have minimal time they want to put in, for tennis, anyways. A consult to access, get some agreement with player and full-time coach on steps and execution progress the big time former player recommends, then monitor progress.
And be mindful that most players are not as wealthy as Fed, and can’t afford the 150K plus to hire a former star, anyways.
Murray did get fairly lucky with Mauresmo, I believe, got more corporate endorsements from his display of PC…and he has been playing better han anyone but Nole this year, maybe him just being back in form, maybe Amelie is a boost to his camp dynamic and a fine coach. Just don’t know.

And Djokovic seems to have made very good coaching choices.

Humble Rafa Says:

Mr. No Personality was good fit for Mr. No Personality from Scotland. Those matches are only made in heaven, once in a lifetime.

And Djokovic seems to have made very good coaching choices.

So did I. But that would mean giving credit to a goat, which violates a cardinal rule in this forum.

Margot Says:

Turd alert.

Jock-KatH Says:

Ready, steady, THROW……………

Margot Says:

@Kat
Bull’s eye!

Diana Says:

I think Lendl to a Dimitrov’s coach never been discussed, Just Dimitrov used Lendl academy for reparation and consultancy. Dimitrov officially have a coach from “Good to Great” academy.

How much is Nole paying becker?

Wog Boy Says:

“How much is Nole paying becker?”

Not enough.
