Bernard Tomic: I Want To Crack The Top 10 In The Next Few Months

Benard Tomic is looking at 2016 as a breakthrough year. After a solid 2015, Tomic is now targetting a spot in the Top 10 and start beating big names.

“Very happy, very pleased,” said Tomic said of 2015. “Felt like I could have done a little bit better, maybe reached the top 12, 13, but can’t regret anything, played a very good year and now it’s obviously there the next few months where I’ve got the possibility to crack the top 10. But it’s a long way away, I have to stay focused and I have to play good tennis.

“The players in tennis now – the top four, top eight – are very strong players and it’s about beating them consistently each week, making deep runs into tournaments and beating these top players,” Tomic said.

“You have to earn it. The next few months we shall see and I’ll try my best.”

The 23-year-old Tomic finished last year at No. 18, and with Richard Gasquet already out of the Australian Open, the Australian is hopeful of a Top 16 seed in Melbourne.

“That’s a huge thing,” Tomic said of the seedings which will be released next Monday. “I have to do well this week, win some matches … more confidence into the Australian Open would be a big thing for me.”

Tomic opens in Brisbane against Nicholas Mahut.

Wog Boy Says:

The smartest thing Tomic did was bringing Tony Roche in his team, more as the mentor than coach, they worked quietly into getting in top 20 and achieved it, I can see him cracking top10. Kyrgios helped him too by jumping into spotlight and taking pressure of Tomic.

It will be interesting to see how Kyrgios will show up this year, his mentor is Leyton Hewitt and he is very serious about mentoring Kyrgios.

If only my favorite Aussie, Kokkinakis, can recover from shoulder operation and start to get some much needed wins.

Yolita Says:

I don’t know whether Kyrgios took pressure off Tomic or awakened his competitive spirit, but Tomic is keen to remain the top-ranked Australian.

I hope he gets that top-10 spot. I’ve always had a soft spot for Bernie.

Wog Boy Says:

Kyrgios nice gesture of support for Kokkinakis after beating Zverev in Hopman Cup, he wrote on camera:

“Get well soon Kokk”

Margot Says:

Happy New Year all you tennis-x lovelies.
At the moment I’m busy building an ark and it’s far, far worse in the North.
It’s enough to drive a woman to drink….or daytime TV…………..nooooooo!
Yolita, I’ve a “soft spot” for Atomic too and I hope he makes it. God knows we need some fresh faces up there.
Hewitt has also said Nick The Kid is destined that way too. Well, to quote a source only Brits will recognise, “He would say that wouldn’t he?” But I hope 2016 is the year when either 1) Nick quits to do some sport he enjoys or 2) gets his tennis act together.

J-Kath Says:

Margot …Your choice of animals will be crucial…don’t forget a couple of Goats.
“Lang may yer lum reek”.

Margot Says:

Kath: kids grow into goats….some of the time…. anyway.
You seem more chipper m’dear. Does that mean your hubster’s better? Hope so.

Okiegal Says:

@Margot……Happy New Year to you too! Byron would always get his shot gun and go out side and shoot it straight in the air up at midnight. Missed that little shenanigan this year.

@J-Kath….Same as Margot….I hope your better half is feeling much better too…..and Happy New Year!! Okie

Happy New Year GG!

J-Kath Says:

Thanks You Two.

Alas, negative to main question. Still in hospital and “will not be coming home any time soon”.

A Minister in W’s ward of 4, gave him a bible as a Xmas present…then objected when Walter put the overhead light on…(to read a nwsp.). Wonder what he would have said if it had been the Bible?

Cunning Me has a plan for tomorrow.

Extreme Tennis Says:

Alexandra Says:

I can’t really see him making the top 10. Not before some guys in the top 10 retire at least. Top 15 sure, but getting higher is still more difficult. Not talking about a few weeks, but a permanent top 10 spot of course.

John Says:

The press loves it when guys trash talk and come out with their goals as predictions. But usually this is wishful thinking. If he was so good he’d have made the top 10 a long time ago. I recall back in ~2009 Tsonga talking about his goals to be No 1 and we’ve seen how that’s worked out – the guy hasn’t even been much of threat at the majors. Best advice for these guys is to let your results speak for themsves.

Gypsy Gal Says:

John agree, great champions know when they are hot,and know when they are not,and know they dont need to brag about how good they are,as their records and results speak for themselves,Tomic and the rest should take note….

Wog Boy Says:

GG,
Not quite, Roger keeps reminding us all the time how good he is, last year in Brisbane was almost the same message to his opponents “don’t mess with me I am in great form, my BH is better than ever, my confidence is sky high, moving better than ever.. ” and then BOOM…Seppi came..

Okiegal Says:

@J-Kath……I have got to hear this plan……Kunning Kath?? Get them straightened out…..Walter doesn’t need the aggravation….since he isn’t feeling well.

Gypsy Gal Says:

Okie saw your message,HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU TOO ;))….

Margot Says:

Sorry to hear that Kath., hope your “cunning plan” works out.
@OK
How about letting off a sky rocket to remember your Byron? You could make that your tradition.

Gypsy Gal Says:

Ah Margot thats a sweet idea, youve made me cry :(,my hubby and i lit a candle on Christmas Eve,and sat quietly for a few minutes to remember my parents,we do it every year now….

roy Says:

he doesn’t have the return game to stay in the top 10 even if he gets there. he returns with roddick stats but doesn’t have the serve to cover it. dimitrov has the same problem. compare ‘baby fed”s return game to big fed’s return game and there is a huge difference. yesterday’s match highlighted this very well.

Okiegal Says:

@Margot 4:40

That is a good idea. I will have to get the fireworks in June….we can’t buy them until then. I think that would suffice to keep the tradition going.

Michael Says:

Frankly, I do not think Tomic has the game to make it big. Even if by chance, he makes it to the top 10, by no time, he may regress.

RZ Says:

Tomic might crack the top 10 but no way he stays there as he never seems invested enough in the work (e.g., quitting a match while ahead since he decided he didn’t care)
