Novak Djokovic Loses Appeal, No Australian Open, He’ll Be Deported
Nine time champion Novak Djokovic will not have the opportunity to defend his title and win a 21st Grand Slam at the Australian Open.
Just within the hour, the Serb lost his appeal to have his visa reinstated. The decision was unanimous by the three Federal Court judges of Australia. There is no pathway for an appeal.
The Court will also said Djokovic had to pay the costs, but no ruling on any 3-year ban.
The World No. 1 sought the courts to overturn the Immigration Minister’s Friday decision to revoke Djokovic’s visa.
Djokovic’s case delayed the release of the schedule some 24 hours. With the hearing dragging on, the schedule was released just after 4pm and included Djokovic’s match against Miomir Kecmanovic last on Rod Laver. He’ll now be replaced by a lucky loser.
The 34-year-old Djokovic hasn’t missed the Australian Open since 2004.
He will remain No. 1 but will drop all his title points and miss a chance at a 10th Australian and a 21st Slam.
