Russian and Belarussian Players Like Medvedev, Rublev, Sabalenka Might Be Banned From Wimbledon

A month ago a report emerged about the possibility of Russian players getting banned from playing Wimbledon. That story died off. But it’s now back and back with some heft.

Earlier, the ITF announced a ban on Russian and Belarussian teams from competition on the international stage, and the tours suspended events in those countries. The Grand Slams are now taking action.

While the French will likely go on as planned, it appears Wimbledon is set to announce in the coming days if not hours that Russian and Belarussian players will be banned from competing in their event this June.

According to Wimbledon, regardless of their politics, their support or their residence, players like Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev, Aryna Sabalenka and Victoria Azarenka will not be allowed to play, if reports are true.

War is terrible, we know. But to me it’s hard to put all these players into a basket and blame them. And many have come out against the war. They have no authority or power.

And all this leads to a very slippery slope and sets quite the precedent.

Let’s say the U.S.A. invades Syria, will American players get banned from future events?

Is this really the direction the sport/sports should be heading? Right now, I don’t believe the NBA or NHL has taken actions against its players from Russia or Belarus, but tennis has.

I know the UK PM talked about having these players publicly denounce the war. Some Ukrainian players have spoken about giving them lie detectors. That’s nonsense and doesn’t help.

Wimbledon can do what Wimbledon wants, but isn’t there a better way for the pro tennis community to come together and show support for the Ukraine without penalizing the players?

UPDATE: Just after this post, Wimbledon confirmed the ban and their ban from all UK events (Queen’s among them), in a statement:

It is therefore our intention, with deep regret, to decline entries from Russian and Belarusian players to The Championships 2022.

Ian Hewitt, Chairman of the All England Club, commented: “We recognise that this is hard on the individuals affected, and it is with sadness that they will suffer for the actions of the leaders of the Russian regime.

“We have very carefully considered the alternative measures that might be taken within the UK Government guidance but, given the high profile environment of The Championships, the importance of not allowing sport to be used to promote the Russian regime and our broader concerns for public and player (including family) safety, we do not believe it is viable to proceed on any other basis at The Championships.”

If circumstances change materially between now and June, we will consider and respond accordingly.

We also welcome the LTA’s decision in declining entries from Russian and Belarusian players to UK events to ensure that British tennis is delivering a consistent approach across the summer.

This is a bad day for tennis. The biggest tournament in the sport is turning top players away.

1. As noted in this story, such a slippery slope to hold athletes accountable for government actions. Where does this end?
2. Based on ATP response, this is not landing well. Do we have a potential boycott?
3. The sport is in transition. Federer, Nadal, Djoker and Serena are very close to the end. New stars need to emerge and need to keep fans interested. What happened in Australia and now Wimbledon is turning viewers away.

They were never on my country of the USA about the half million children Madeline Albright admitted were killed in Iraq by US sanctions. Maybe because the UK and the All England Club supported those sanctions, as well as the US invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq to impose Freedom! Western Values! Democracy! by bombing and shooting the locals enough to make them want the New World Order. UK and the All England Club also stand complicit in those wars.
And shall we mention the US and UK bombing Serbia?

But somehow the Ruling Elites have made virtue signaling of love and support of Ukraine as obligatory, and any question of the US role behind Euromaidan and the paying and staffing of the present Ukrainian Azov Nazi/Nationalist-Fascists/and billionaire Jewish Oligarchs treasonous.
And any failure to wave Ukraine Pom-Poms as disloyal to America, the UK, Boris, and the vegetable US President. And it is all our obligation to give whatever Zelenskyy the puppet installed by the US CIA and State Dept, wants in the way of free lethal weapons, since there is no money given his peers have looted the nation.

To the point on tennis, agree with dryeagle that if tennis does this, becomes politicized by the all England Club tennis gets damaged like US football and basketball have been damaged by black and Cultural Marxist politics, the US NBA sold out to China.

A boycott would place a lot of players in a position of being called traitors against the Ukrainian Freedom Lovers, or something similar, in nations gripped in the moral hysteria whipped up by the Puppet Masters and the media they control. To me, let the boycott happen and then let the Russians screwed by it plot to have their day against the All-England Club in different ways. Sports exist for entertainment – not politics – but it would be enjoyable as high entertainment if some Russian wins the year after, and shows maximum disrespect for the Trophy, the All England Club, and the “Royal Box”. (Accept the trophy, ignore the people on the Finals Championship Stand, walk over to the royal box, spit on the trophy, throw it on the ground in front of the royals and MPs and Puppet Masters – walk out)

Fortunately, there are a lot of new stars. And time for the older “legends” to leave if they can’t play anymore at a high level.

During WW2, a certain class of Brits used to kick, shoot, strangle and take pleasure in torturing German dog breeds, like German Shepherds and Datschunds. People with German sounding names were also physically attacked, shot, their homes set on fire, even Jews – just because their names sounded German. Many Jewish families had to change their surnames, the German Shepherd dog was saved by someone imaginatively deciding to refer to them as “Alsatians”, and even The Royal family had to change their surname from Mountbatten to Windsor.

“Class” is clearly an inappropriate word to use in these circumstamces, but the board of Wimbledon and LTA are “virtue singalling” and making it obvious what kind of class they belong to.

I am utterly ashamed of their decision.

Are they going to kick out Zverev, whose parents and family are Russian, but who happened to be born in Germany? How about Tsitsipas, whose mother is Russian? Will they also throw out the Chinese and indian players because they won’t intruduce sanctions on Russia? How about throwing out Serbian players too, they haven’t introduced sanctions either? Perhaps Andy and Jamie Murray should be kicked out too, they haven’t condemned the moves to Scottish Independence?

Politics shouldn’t meddle in sport. Period. It’s clear that Grand Slam tournaments are no longer “Open”. Australian Open, and now Wimbledon have compromised their standing and tarnished their reputation by allowing themselves to be used as a political football.

Shameful and disgusting. The entire board need to resign, and to be replaced by people who understand what sport is about.
