Novak Djokovic: As Of Now, I Cannot Play The US Open Due To Vaccination Requirements
Novak Djokovic is fully aware that Wimbledon could very well be his final Grand Slam of the season. With the USA still prohibiting unvaccinated foreigners to enter the country, Djokovic right now is not allowed to enter America and play the US Open. So Wimbledon could be it and his last chance this year to at least got to Slam No. 21.
“As of today I am not allowed to enter the States under these circumstances,” Djokovic said Saturday. “Of course I’m aware of that. That is an extra motivation to do well here. Hopefully I can have a very good tournament, as I have done in the last three editions. Then I’ll just have to wait and see. I would love to go to States. But as of today, that’s not possible.
“There is not much I can do any more. It’s really up to the U.S. government to make a decision whether or not they allow unvaccinated people to go into the country.”
Djokovic added that he will still not get vaccinated.
Djokovic will open his title defense on Monday against Soonwoo Kwon. The Serb has won Wimbledon six times and the last three. He has won his last 21 matches on grass. He’s trying to win a fourth straight and tie Pete Sampras.
“I would love to be in a position to fight for another trophy. Well, I am in the position, but I would like to be in the last match to eventually make history,” he said.
