While Carlos Alcaraz lost in his post-US Open tournament opener, Iga Swiatek was victorious. The top seed gained a retirement from Ajla Tomljanovic who had to stop down 7-5, 2-all due to a left knee issue in Ostrava.

The Australian came from 4-1 down in the first and was pushing the world No. 1.

“I’ve had a three-week break from playing matches, and after such an intense time it seems like a lot,” said Swiatek. “I felt like I need to get back to the rhythm, and it wasn’t easy. I had a bye, and Ajla already played a few matches. So I felt like I need to catch up. But I’m pretty happy this match was so intense, because I feel like I had to go to another level and it’s going to prepare me for the next matches.”

Swiatek will await the winner of the Karolina Muchova-Caty McNally affair. She has never won an indoor title at tour level.

The injury-riddled Muchova upset seven seed Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-4, 6-4, rallying from a break down in each set.

Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova ousted No. 2 seed Paula Badosa 7-6(4), 6-4.

“The whole match, every game was very, very tight,” the Czech favorite said. “It was really about a few points. Paula really played great. It was really tough to break each other, but in the second set, we did it a few times.

“I had to really close it out with good serves because, otherwise, she put everything back in the last few games. It was really difficult physically, and mentally as well.”

Kvitova will now face fellow Wimbledon winner Elena Rybakina who came from a break down in the third to deny Aliaksandra Sasnovich.

Barbora Krejcikova continued on her run rolling over Shelby Rogers 6-1, 6-1.
