Novak Djokovic Opens Clay Season Tuesday At Monte Carlo Masters
World No. 1 Novak Djokovic will open his 2024 clay season Tuesday at the Monte Carlo Masters.
The 36-year-old Djokovic will take on the upset-minded Roman Safiullin in the second round.
Djokovic is a 2-time Monte Carlo champion but hasn’t won since 2015. In fact, 2015 is the last time Djokovic has even made the final weekend. And the last three years, he’s not even made the quarterfinals.
This season, the Serb has been subpar, with just an 8-3 record and no finals. And he said over the weekend his expectations are low.
“My expectations are not very high, with the way I have been playing this year at the tournaments and also the results that I had in Monaco in previous years were not great, so I keep my expectations low,” Djokovic said. “For me, it is about building my game on clay courts and trying to reach the peak again.”
Elsewhere tomorrow, Stan Wawrinka, Alexander Zverev and Gael Monfils are also in action.
Results thus far have seen Grigor Dimitrov, 2-time champion Stefanos Tsitsipas, Karen Khachanov, Ugo Humbert and Arthur Fils have advanced with Taylor Fritz losing on Sunday.
