ATP REVIEW/PREVIEWChang says farewell in a good match (ATP)
On the men's side Tuesday at the US Open, four of the bargain basement seeds were weeded out in former No. 1 (14)Kuerten (l. to Tursunov in five sets), who has never really recovered from hip surgery, (21)Mantilla (l. to Ivo "I Beat Lleyton at Wimbledon" Karlovic), (29)Lopez (l. to Stepanek), and (32)Spadea (l. to Saretta in four). Guga was up a break late in the fifth set, but was broken back before playing an awful tiebreak to concede the match to the 20-year-old Russian. Top-seeded Andre Agassi put on a dominant display in his opener, allowing Alex Corretja only five games in a rout on Arthur Ashe Stadium. "Obviously he's a little low on confidence," said Agassi of the struggling Corretja. "He's still a good mover and striker of the ball. Windy conditions, not having a lot of confidence, it's easy to miss a few shots on crucial points. I don't think the score was as reflective as how close some of those sets could have been."

Other seeds advancing were (4)Roddick (d. Henman, who served for the second set at 5-4, in straights), (8)Schuettler (d. Arthurs in four), (11)Srichaphan (d. Saulnier in four), (12)Schalken (d. Boutter), (15)Gonzalez (d. Chang in his last career match), (19)Calleri (d. Eschauer in four), (25)Costa (d. "Everybody Loves" Ramon Sluiter in four), (28)Kafelnikov (d. Vliegen in four after dropping the first set), and (33)Chela (d. Karanusic). Team Henman needs to check the video replay of the serve, especially the game broken at love when serving for the second set, because that delivery is sad -- like Stefan Edberg's third serve. Roddick worked the mix-it-up gameplan against the Brit to near perfection. "In Washington I made the mistake of giving him one pace, one pace, one pace, one pace," said Roddick on the loss to Henman a few weeks back. "He's not easy to overpower because he feels the ball so well. That was definitely something I had to do tonight."

Today is a light day on the men's side, with seeds in action including (2)Federer vs. Acasuso, (27)Zabaleta vs. Blake, (22)El Aynaoui vs. A.Kim, (7)Moya vs. Draper, (30)Gaudio vs. Massu, (13)Nalbandian vs. Kohlschreiber, and (10)Novak vs. Mario "Baby Goran" Ancic.

WTA REVIEW/PREVIEW
Four seeds were purged Tuesday on the women's side at the US Open, led by (10)Maleeva (l. to Asagoe). Other low-rent seeds sliding out were (16)Bovina (l. to Cervanova 6-4 in the third), (21)Pistolesi (l. to Schaul), and (31)Alexandra "Dr. A" Stevenson (l. to Loit 6-4 in the third). Seeds advancing were (2)Henin-Hardenne (d. Kapros, who has the worst second serve on tour), (6)Capriati (d. Torrens Valero 6-1, 6-0), (7)Myskina (d. Nagyova 6-1 in the third), (11)Dementieva (d. Vaskova), (15)Sugiyama (d. Martinez Granados 6-1, 6-0), (20)Farina Elia (d. Salerni), (22)Dokic (d. Gagliardi), (23)Dechy (d. Mattek 6-4 in the third), (29)Schiavone (d. Fislova), (30)Serna (d. Cho 6-1 in the third), (32)Mikaelian (d. Weingartner), and (33)Srebotnik (d. Drake 6-1 in the third after dropping the first set 6-0, the 'ol Canadian Throat Grabber). "I try to forget what happened last year at the French Open," said H-H, who lost to Kapros in their last meeting on the red dirt. "I was sick, so I was totally different. It's just I just want to say that a first round is never easy, especially against a qualifier who played three matches before playing the first round in the main draw. So, you know, I think it's normal what happened today. When I had to play, I did it." Among the un-seeds, Dinara "Where's My Brother?" Safina beat American Carly "No Relation" Gullickson in a battle of comers, Mary Pierce advanced to a meeting with (22)Dokic, and Maria "Grunt-ilicious" Sharapova pounded Virginia Ruano Pascual 6-1, 6-1.

Seeds in action Wednesday are (5)Mauresmo vs. Cohen Aloro, (1)Clijsters vs. Granville, (3)Davenport vs. Elena Camerin, (9)Hantuchova vs. Vakulenko, (13)Zvonareva vs. Harkleroad, (17)Shaughnessy vs. Matevzic, (28)Raymond vs. Czink, (19)Petrova vs. Denisa "Hanging" Chladkova, (24)Suarez vs. Seguera, (18)Schnyder vs. Tanasugarn, (14)Coetzer vs. Schett, (27)Kuznetsova vs. Mandula, and (12)Martinez vs. Molik.
