Suarez Chokes French Semi to Dementieva

Posted on June 3, 2004

Argentine Paola Suarez has played many a grand slam doubles final, but that didn’t stop her from putting on a choking display Thursday in the French Open women’s semifinals against Elena Dementieva.

The Russian Dementieva, who will be appearing in her career-first slam final, merely had to keep the ball in play throughout most of the match for a 6-0, 7-5 win.

Dementieva ran through the first set 6-0 in just 27 minutes, the first loss of a set for Suarez in the event.

Suarez got an early break in the second set, but serving at 5-6, a double fault on match point was an appropriate end to the disastrous outing.

Dementieva will now face either countrywoman Anastasia Myskina or former champion Jennifer Capriati in Saturday's final.
