Novak Advances, Costa Rocked at ATP Gstaad

Posted on July 8, 2004

Former French Open champ Albert Costa dropped his win-loss on the year to 15-16 after a second-round loss Wednesday at the ATP stop in Gstaad, with the No. 8 seed falling meekly to Russian comer Igor Andreev.

"I'm really happy to beat Albert today," said Andreev, who beat another former Roland Garros champ a month back in Juan Carlos Ferrero on dirt. "I played very good and I'm really enjoying playing here. I'm confident now and I will do my best in the quarterfinals."

Defending champ and No. 4 seed Jiri Novak (d. Montanes in three) also advanced, as did un-seeds (Q)"You Say" Potito Starace (d. Hanescu 7-6 in the third), and Spain's Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo (d. Koubek).

Thursday in Gstaad features (6)Ferrer vs. Mantilla in an all-ESP, Mayer vs. (3)Schuettler in an all-German, Stepanek vs. (WC)Rosset, and (1)Federer vs. "Dr." Ivo Karlovic.

Both seeds won through in Bastad Wednesday in (6)Fernando "Gonzo" Gonzalez (d. Nieminen) and (8)Mariano Zabaleta (d. Irakli "Freak Show" Labadze), joined by two un-seeds in Argentine comer Juan Monaco (d. Vliegen 6-1 in the third) and Spain's Al Martin (d. Volandri in three).

"It is great to be back in Bastad," said the defending champ Zabaleta. "It was a strange match today since Labadze is a very good player but kind of crazy sometimes. I hope to do well here since I feel I am a better player than last year."

On tap today in Bastad is Verdasco vs. (4)Chela, (5)Robredo vs. Soderling, Olivier "All We Need is Just a Little" Patience vs. (2)Gaudio, and (Q)Ventura vs. Rafael "The Prodigy" Nadal in an all-Spanish match-up.

In an all-unseeded, all-unwatchable Wednesday at Newport, five winners advanced on the grass in Italy's David Sanguinetti (d. (LL)Kendrick in three), Americans (Q)Glenn Weiner (d. Peya), (WC)Brian Vahaly (d. (Q)Mertinak) and (Q)Brian Baker (d. Moodie 7-6 in the third), and Belgian Gilles Elseneer (d. (Q)Ram). For Vahaly the win snapped a seven-match losing streak, and was his first victory on the year.

Scheduled for the lawns today are (1)Spadea vs. (WC)Vahaly in an all-American, Bogomolov Jr. vs. (2)Blake in an all-American, Carlsen vs. Rusedski in an all-over-the-hill, (3)Jurgen "Tuna" Melzer vs. Mahut, (Q)Weiner vs. (7)Popp in an all-Popp-goes-the-Weiner, Morrison vs. (Q)Baker in an all-American, Elseneer vs. (5)Saulnier, and (8)Dupuis vs. Sanguinetti.

NEWS, NOTES, QUOTES, AND BARBS
The Globe and Mail on the chance of John McEnroe's new talk show not sucking: "He tried hosting a game show on ABC two years back. It was called The Chair and featured strapped-in contestants being grilled by McEnroe while being distracted by live alligators and fireworks. Seriously. McEnroe was simply awful. He flubbed the guest banter and even had trouble reading the cue cards. McEnroe was likewise shaky when host-subbing for David Letterman during his extended heart-surgery break. He was easily he most awkward of the substitute hosts and barreled his way through the hour like a tipsy best man at a wedding reception. It's just not his thing. Through no fault of his own, McEnroe is wildly out of his element as a TV host."...If ya caught the first McEnroe episode, guess who called in? Non other than Andy Roddick.
