Belgians Say Kuznetsova a DoperPosted on January 17, 2005 After allegations that three players had possible tested positive for banned doping substances at an exhibition in Belgium, now Belgium's Regional Sports Minister Claude Eerdekens says Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova is the lone player who tested positive for a banned substance."One of four players in a December 19 exhibition tournament in Charleroi tested positive in a doping test," Eederkens said in a statement. "The Sports Ministry wishes to point out that the athlete who tested positive for ephedrine is Svetlana Kuznetsova." Kuznetsova has denied ever taking illegal substances. "I am not worried. I am definitely not using nothing to push myself up in the game," Kuznetsova said. "I'm pretty sure that everybody's pretty clean...because the anti-doping program, it doesn't allow us to take nothing." Ephedrine, the substance in question, is contained in cold remedies and used by some athletes for short-term energy and to increase alertness. According to the Associated Press, a second sample test that would confirm the banned substance isn't known. The WTA Tour said they were unaware of any positive tests. |
