McEnroe Into Quarters at Senior Masters

Posted on December 2, 2005

John McEnroe defeated Swede Mikael Pernfors 7-6(5), 6-4 Thursday to advance into the quarterfinals at the year-end senior Masters in London, afterwards announcing he will play some ATP-level doubles events in 2006 starting with San Jose.

"I could play any tournament I wanted to -- I have an open invitation and I earned that with my record," McEnroe said. "That's a nice feeling...it's something I do think about now and then."

Also into the quarters Thursday were Pat Cash (d. Pioline in three), Paul Haarhuis (d. Muster in three), and defending champion Jim Courier (d. Jarryd in three) who will now face Pioline.

"Cedric is a fantastic player, great to watch and he has a beautifully flowing game," Courier said. "We've had some great battles over the years -- a tug of war that's gone back and forth. We've played twice this year in Europe, we're 1-1 and it's going to be a battle. I'll be ready."

Scheduled for the Friday quarterfinals are Courier vs. Pioline, Sergi Bruguera vs. Jarryd, McEnroe vs. Thomas Muster in a battle of former No. 1s, and Cash vs. Paul Haarhuis.
