Seeds Cruise, Clijsters On Deck at WTA Antwerp
Posted on February 15, 2006All three seeds in action cruised into the second round without dropping a set Tuesday at the WTA stop in Antwerp in (5) Elena Dementieva (d. Ani), (6) Patty Schnyder (d. Krajicek, bagel in the first), and (9) Daniela Hantuchova (d. Ondraskova 1-and-0).
Other winners Tuesday were Serb Ana Ivanovic (d. Vinci), France's Tatiana Golovin (d. (WC) Flipkens, setting up a meeting with the top-seeded Clijsters), and Poland's Marta Domachowska (d. Medina Garrigues), all in straight sets.
"This is a special place for me," said Clijsters, playing in Belgium as the No. 1 player for the first time in her career and celebrating by buying a bottle of champagne for all fans during her first match Wednesday. "I've had some of the most amazing memories of my career here, especially after last year coming back here, the reception I got has never left me."
Scheduled for Wednesday in Antwerp are Peschke vs. Sprem, Ivanovic vs. Petrova, Safina vs. Srebotnik, Clijsters vs. Golovin, Cohen-Aloro vs. Savchuk, and Daniilidou vs. Koukalova.
