Players 7-for-14 in Tennis Video Challenge Debut in MiamiPosted on March 23, 2006 The video replay challenge system debuted this week in professional tennis, with players going 7-for-14 during the 14 line calls challenged Wednesday at the NASDAQ-100 Open.
On the opening day of the video replay system in Miami, ATP players had a 6-2 success ratio with challenged calls, while WTA players were 1-5. Nicolas Lapentti had four successful challenges alone in his loss to Xavier Malisse. "It's gotten off to a great start and we have to continue the same way the rest of the tournament," said Gayle Bradshaw, the ATP Administrator of Rules and Competition. "Everything went really smooth. After seeing how it went today, people thought it would slow things down but it actually helped speed up the game. The time it took was under 10 seconds." American Ashley Harkleroad, who had the first successful challenge of the system during her loss to compatriot Jamea Jackson, liked the system and told reporters it would help in her on-court arguments with husband and fellow pro Alex Bogomolov. "I don't really argue too much, but my husband can go on and on all day long," Harkleroad said. "Sometimes I just want to be like, 'Look, the ball was in, move on.'" Each player with a stadium court match in Miami receives two challenges per set to review line calls. If the player is correct with a challenge, then the player retains the same number of challenges. If the player is incorrect with a challenge, then one of the challenges is lost. Each player receives one additional challenge in tiebreaks, and challenges may not be carried over from one set to another. |
