Kuzy Upset, Top 3 Into Semis at WTA CharlestonPosted on April 15, 2006 No. 4 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova failed to join the top three seeds in the semifinals of the Family Circle Cup in Charleston Friday, upset 6-3, 7-6(4) by No. 6 seed Anna-Lena Groenefeld.
"I could not get on top of it," Kuznetsova told reporters. "I was not feeling playing my game. I was not feeling my shots. I was fighting in the end. I was feeling better. But still it was not good enough." Other winners into the semis on the dirt were (1) Justine Henin-Hardenne (d. (7) Safina), (2) Nadia Petrova (d. Castano, bagel in the second), and (3) Patty Schnyder (d. (8) Dechy, bagel in the first). "I had everything in my hands," Petrova said after baking the bagel. "She played a few good points but I must say I just didn't let her play the tennis she likes. She likes the heavy balls, to move a lot on the court. I just tried to make the points as short as possible." Henin-Hardenne has won 14 straight matches is Charleston. Saturday's semifinal match-ups are (1) Henin-Hardenne vs. (3) Schnyder (H-H leads career meetings 6-0), and (2) Petrova vs. (6) Groenefeld (Petrova leads 3-1). |
