Posted on July 18, 2006

Top seed Patty Schnyder, looking for her first title of 2006, began her Cincinnati campaign Monday with a comeback 5-7, 6-2, 7-6(1) win over American Lilia Osterloh to move into the second round.

Other main draw winners on the day were Finland's Emma Laine (d. Bammer) and American Amy "Joltin' Joe" Frazier (d. countrywoman (WC) Kirkland).

The final round of qualifying was also completed, with four more onto the main dance floor in Chan Chin-Wei (TPE, d. Stevenson from a set down), Abigail Spears (USA), Rossana De Los Rios (PAR), and Vasilisa Bardina (RUS, d. Gullickson in three).

After the main draw withdrawals of Daniela Hantuchova (right foot injury) and Mashona Washington (left knee injury) over the weekend and Melinda Czink's withdrawal on Monday (left shoulder strain), the three highest-ranked losers in the final round of qualifying, Grandin, Gullickson and Stevenson, were all granted lucky loser berths.

On court Tuesday are Serena vs. Myskina, Savchuk vs. Jankovic, Spears vs. Glatch, Stevenson vs. Mirza, Mattek vs. Perry, Srebotnik vs. de los Rios, Chan vs. Bartoli, Dulko vs. Domachowska, Gullickson vs. Camerin, Yuan vs. Diaz-Oliva, Lepchenko vs. Grandin, and Bardina vs. Sromova.
