Roddick v Blake in All-American Indy FinalPosted on July 23, 2006 Second seed Andy Roddick beat No. 4 seed and defending champion Robby Ginepri 7-5, 6-3 in the semifinals Saturday.
Roddick, 23, is seeking his third title at the event in four years. He broke Ginepri twice and held every service game of his own. Roddick won 64 points compared to 48 for Ginepri. Roddick lifted his career record against Ginepri to 6-1 and avenged his defeat at the hands of Ginepri in the quarterfinals of this event last year. "I've played a lot of matches with him, and Robby can handle pace," Roddick said. "So, I tried to go about it differently. He wasn't expecting that. It's more what's happening after the serve. Not a lot of sloppy errors on serves. That's key. I'm not giving away games. I'm happy about the way things are going. I am playing a little more aggressively. The points are on my terms." In the final Sunday, Roddick will play top seed James Blake, who beat No. 9 Xavier Malisse 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 in the other semifinal Saturday. "He's a streaky player, meaning he always has the chance of a bad streak," Blake said of Malisse. "He can be dangerous. The surface underneath my feet gives me confidence -- it's hard courts, it's the U.S. I have great preparation on hard courts." Roddick is playing in his first final since October in Lyon (d. Monfils). He improved his 2006 record to 30-12 with Saturday's win. He won the title here in 2003 (d. Srichaphan) and 2004 (d. Kiefer). In this year's tournament, Roddick has yet to drop serve in singles (40 games) or doubles (18 games). He will be attempting to capture singles and doubles titles for the second time in his career ('02 Houston). Ginepri's 2006 record fell to 9-17. He beat Taylor Dent in last year's final. Blake broke Malisse five times in their semifinal match and was broken three times himself. Blake won 80 points to 71 for Malisse. Blake is playing in his fifth final of the year. He won the title at Sydney in January (d. Andreev) and at Las Vegas in March (d. Hewitt). He was runner-up at Indian Wells in March (l. to Federer) and at London-Queen's Club in June (l. to Hewitt). Blake has a career record of 1-6 against Roddick, breaking through with his first win in the semifinals of London-Queen's Club in June. Blake improved his 2006 record to 36-15 with his win Saturday. He had never advanced beyond the first round in three previous appearances at Indianapolis. -- ATP |
