Querrey Beat; Roddick Injured in Win at ATP LA Posted on July 28, 2006
Powerful Russian Dmitry Tursunov charged into his fifth quarterfinal of the year with a 7-5, 6-4 win over 18-year-old American Sam Querrey at the Countrywide Classic Thursday. Tursunov, who is just two places below his career-high INDESIT ATP Ranking of No. 31, fired 10 aces and saved both break points he faced.
Tursunov improved to 27-20 on the season but he is 0-4 in quarterfinal clashes this season. In the quarters he will play top seed Andy Roddick.
"There are some things I could have done better today," Tursunov said. "A few years ago I would have gotten down on myself but now I do the things that I need to do win those types of matches. Serve was working for me today and whoever is going to win will need to be serving well. A big part of my win today was experience. I went for my shots when I needed to and then sat back and let him make the errors when I did not need to go for it."
Roddick fired 21 aces en route to a 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-2 win over fellow American Scott Oudsema, but injured his back in the process.
The former World No. 1, who finished runner-up to James Blake last week in Indianapolis, is looking to snap a title drought stretching back to Lyon in October 2005. Lyon was his fifth title of the 2005 season.
Seventh seed Dominik Hrbaty broke serve five times during a 7-5, 6-4 win over German Lars Burgsmuller to reach the quarterfinals. The Slovak, who is a modest 15-16 on the year, had not reached the quarterfinals since Adelaide in the first week of the year, when he advanced to the semifinals.
After a rough first half of the season Robby Ginepri is one win away from his second consecutive semifinal after defeating Kenneth Carlsen 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-4 to reach the quarters. Ginepri, a 2005 US Open semifinalist, had a 6-16 record in 2006 before the start of the US Open Series in Indianapolis last week, but has now won five of his past six matches. -- ATP
