Davenport v World No 1 Mauresmo in New Haven QuartersPosted on August 24, 2006 NEW HAVEN, CT, USA -- A thrilling quarterfinal schedule awaits Pilot Pen Tennis presented by Michelob Ultra fans on Thursday, as four Top 10 Sony Ericsson WTA Tour stars fill the line-up. Top seed Amelie Mauresmo will play defending champion Lindsay Davenport, Svetlana Kuznetsova will face new Los Angeles champion Elena Dementieva and Justine Henin-Hardenne is up against Mara Santangelo. Samantha Stosur is also competing for a spot in the semifinals against Marion Bartoli.
Mauresmo won her first summer hardcourt match Wednesday at Connecticut Tennis Center, 46 61 62, against Russian qualifier Galina Voskoboeva. The Frenchwoman, who captured the Australian Open and Wimbledon this year, withdrew from the Rogers Cup last week due to a right shoulder strain. She said she didn't feel pain in her Wednesday match. "It took me some time to get into the match rhythm," Mauresmo said. "Normally it takes time to adjust and then I pumped myself up to take control. I think there were some positive things in the match but there are also things I need to work on." World No.1 Mauresmo faces former world No.1 Davenport for the first time this year. Davenport leads the all-time head-to-head series 11-3. The two faced each other four times in New Haven and Davenport was victorious every time. Davenport won her second round match here, 64 62, against Francesca Schiavone. After five months away from Tour competition due to a back injury, the American veteran returned at Los Angeles. "(Lindsay) also has struggled in the last few months," Mauresmo said. "I don't know where she is with her game but she seems to be getting into rhythm. It will be an especially tough match. She serves pretty well so I need to return better and focus on her serve and try and stop her from dictating the points." No.2 seed Henin-Hardenne prevailed, 64 62, against Anabel Medina Garrigues on Wednesday. The Belgian competed in her first Tour singles match since the Wimbledon final. She withdrew from San Diego and Montreal due to a right knee injury. "After a few weeks out you have to keep your concentration," Henin-Hardenne said. "I wanted to play well on every point even though it's not possible. I have to keep up my intensity, that's my goal right now. My conditioning is pretty good and my knee is feeling alright. I missed tennis in the last few weeks." No.3 Dementieva survived a tough 62 57 60 battle with Daniela Hantuchova on Wednesday. The Russian played a terrific tournament at Los Angeles two weeks ago and returned to the Top 5 for the first time since July 2005. She leads No.5 seed Kuznetsova 3-2 in the all-time series and won the last two encounters. No.4 seed Nadia Petrova lost her opening match for the fifth consecutive time Wednesday. Frenchwoman Bartoli showed tremendous fighting spirit in her 46 64 76(4) victory. She will play her third Tour singles quarterfinal of the year against lucky loser Stosur. -- WTA |
