One Seed Remains in WTA Forest Hills Quarters

Posted on August 24, 2006

FOREST HILLS, NY, USA -- Only one seeded player will be part of Thursday's quarterfinal line-up at the Forest Hills Women's Tennis Classic. No.4 Lourdes Dominguez Lino was the only seed to win her match on Wednesday. No.1 Lucie Safarova and No.3 Sybille Bammer lost Wednesday, while No.2 Sofia Arvidsson exited Tuesday.

Czech teenager Safarova was eliminated by Elena Vesnina, 64 64. The Russian will play Meghann Shaughnessy in her fourth career Sony Ericsson WTA Tour quarterfinal. Vesnina and Shaughnessy just faced each other two weeks ago at Los Angeles and the American prevailed in straight sets.

Bammer lost her 2006 Forest Hills Women's Open debut to Martina Sucha, 26 61 75. Sucha, who also made the quarterfinals here last year, is facing Israeli veteran Anna Smashnova. The two already met twice this year, once at the Australian Open and again at Indian Wells. Sucha won the first encounter in three sets and Smashnova took revenge a few months later, losing only four games.

No.4 Dominguez Lino defeated Iveta Benesova, 61 57 62, to set up a meeting with Indian teen Sania Mirza. After consecutive first round losses at Los Angeles and Montreal, Mirza defeated wild card Alexa Glatch, 62 63, and will be playing in her first quarterfinal since Cincinnati.

Severine Bremond and Maria Elena Camerin are playing in the fourth quarterfinal.
