Camerin Leads Lowlies at WTA Tashkent
Posted on October 2, 2006With only one Top 50 player at the time of the draw, this week's Tashkent Open 2006 in Uzbekistan is among the lowest of the low on the WTA Tour, with $22,925 going to the winner of the "Tier IV" event.
Italian Maria Elena Camerin is the top seed, joined by Russian tongue-twisters Elena Vesnina, Olga Poutchkova, Galina Voskoboeva and Anastassia Rodionova, India's struggling Sania Mirza, Luxembourg winner Alona Bondarenko, and Belarus' Anastasiya Yakimova.
Two Uzbek tongue-twisters got into the mix via wildcards in Iroda Tulyaganova and Akgul Amanmuradova.
Michaella Krajicek, competing this week in Stuttgart, played the bad gal in last year's final, downing the wildcard Amanmuradova in three sets after winning the first set 6-0.
