Martin, Courier Win Openers at Seniors Memphis

Posted on October 5, 2006

Americans Todd Martin and Jim Courier opened the Outback Champions Tour event in Memphis Wednesday night with wins, as both try to add another title after earlier successes this year.

Martin edged Aaron Krickstein 3-6, 6-1, 10-2 (tiebreak), and Courier eased past Mats Wilander 6-4, 6-3.

Courier is in Group A with John McEnroe, Wilander and Wayne Ferreira. Martin is the favorite in Group B with Pat Cash, Krickstein, and Swede Magnus Larsson.

"I'm ready to win another tournament," Wilander assessed his chances earlier in the week. "Well, Jim Courier is tough but otherwise I like my chances...We got great players playing and they all love the game, and it shows. You get to see McEnroe curse, Jim smile, and me win!"

McEnroe stands at No. 2 on the World Senior Rankings, well behind Marcelo Rios who has won all five events he has participated in on the European leg of the senior tour. Courier is at No. 3, Cash at No. 7 and Martin, playing in his third event this year, at No. 8.

Scheduled for Thursday in Memphis are Larsson vs. Cash, and McEnroe vs. Ferreira.
