Yuan Only Monday Winner at PTT Bangkok Open
Posted on October 10, 2006BANGKOK, Thailand -- The only quarterfinalist to return to the PTT Bangkok Open this year became the only one to finish her match on Monday, as main draw qualifying continued at the Tier III hardcourt event.
China's Yuan Meng, who made her only Sony Ericsson WTA Tour quarterfinal here last year, defeated Angelique Widjaja, 63 63, to save a spot in the main draw. All other scheduled qualifying and main draw matches were moved to Tuesday. The match between No.6 seed Meghann Shaughnessy and Indian teen Sania Mirza is one of 14 scheduled Tuesday encounters.
Last year's winner, Nicole Vaidisova, and finalist Nadia Petrova didn't return because they are playing at the Kremlin Cup (Tier I) in Moscow this week. 2005 semifinalists Antonella Serra Zanetti and Gisela Dulko also didn't come back.
No.2 seed Anabel Medina Garrigues and No.3 Nathalie Dechy are the favorites this year, while No.4 Lucie Safarova, No.5 Eleni Daniilidou, Shaughnessy and No.8 Jelena Kostanic are also title contenders. Marion Bartoli was supposed to be the top seed but she withdrew due to a right achilles injury.
