Rios, Krajicek Survive Tests at Seniors Eindhoven
Posted on October 13, 2006Senior tour No. 1 Marcelo Rios and main rival this week in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, Richard Krajicek, remained on course for an undefeated meeting on Saturday by claiming opening-round wins Thursday at the Merrill Lynch Tour of Champions seniors stops.
Rios, who has won all five of his tournaments contested in 2006, turned back a potential challenge on the indoor carpet by former Wimbledon champ Pat Cash, trouncing the Aussie 6-3, 6-1. Krajicek dismissed another Wimbledon champion, albeit narrowly, edging Michael Stich 6-3, 6-7, 10-8 in a final-set tiebreak.
In other round-robin play Wayne Ferreira edged Paul Haarhuis 10-8 in the third, and fan-favorite Goran Ivanisevic subdued Henri Leconte 6-2, 6-4.
Scheduled for Friday are Rios vs. his second consecutive Wimbledon winner in Stich, Leconte vs. Ferreira, Ivanisevic vs. Haarhuis, and Krajicek vs. Cash in a battle of Wimbledon champs.
