Moving Sampras Induction On-linePosted on August 21, 2007 If you missed Pete Sampras’ tearful introduction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in July, you can catch it on-line for the first time on the World Championship Sports Network at WCSN.com.
Sampras was inducted along with women’s former No. 1 Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, Sweden’s Sven Davidson who was inducted as a Master Player, and legendary tennis photographer Russ Adams. Sampras’ induction speech was emotion-filled as he teared-up recalling key moments in his career, such as learning of his coach, Tim Gullikson, dying of cancer and breaking down during a match against Jim Courier at the Australian Open. “I wanted to represent myself and my family and the game in a way which we could all be proud of,” Sampras said. “So as I take my place among the greatest players of all time here in the Hall of Fame, I stand before you both humble and grateful. I’m a tennis player, nothing more and nothing less. That’s more than enough for me. It always has been.” Sampras was presented for induction by his friend and former coach Paul Annacone. “We’re all here to congratulate you, but most of all we want to thank you for letting your dreams become the great theater of our reality,” Anacone said. |
