Keys Puts Scare Into No. 1 Petrova at WTA Ponte Vedra BeachPosted on April 9, 2009 14-year-old American Madison Keys gave Top 10er and No. 1 seed Nadia Petrova all she could handle in the Wednesday night match at the MPS Group Championships in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., with the Russian needing to come back from a break and fight off multiple break points to come out victorious 6-3, 6-2.
Keys was serving up a break 2-1 in the first before Petrova leveled things at 2-2, with Keys creating four break point opportunities off the Russian's serve in the opening set. In the second set Keys had still more break opportunities to level the match, but could not convert as the Russian ran out the last three games of the set. "I was defiantly caught by surprise," Petrova told the media of the gangly, hard-hitting Keys. "The beginning was a little tense. I didn't know what to expect...I was playing completely wrong tennis. I was trying to blow her away from the start and I was missing everything." The Boca Raton/Evert Academy resident unleashed more winners than the Russian, but struggled somewhat with her serving percentage (although through two matches she has the fastest recorded serve at the tournament). "I defiantly had some chances in the first set," Keys said. "But she played really well and I'm just happy to be out here. It was a great experience. It was really cool. I got to play a Top 10 player...It was a great experience and I think winning [a round] in my first WTA event is a big accomplishment." There is no Tennis Channel coverage for the weekend, so U.S. fans wondering where the next women's star is coming from will have to wait for a glimpse of Keys, who at the tender age of 14 displays a powerful all-court game, ending many points against Petrova at the net. She says this was her only stop on the WTA Tour this year, and now it's back to international and U.S. junior events. "Next year, I'll be back," she said. "I'm looking forward to it." |
