Coria Faces Surprise Schuettler in ATP Monte Carlo Final

Posted on April 26, 2004

Guillermo Coria and Rainer Schuettler advanced to the Masters Series-Monte Carlo final Saturday.

The No. 3 Coria recovered from a second-set hiccup to outlast unseeded Marat Safin 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 while Schuettler, not known for his claycourt prowess, turned in a shocking performance against former No. 1 and Roland Garros winner Carlos Moya, handling the Spaniard 7-6(5), 6-4.

"Safin is a very dangerous player," said Coria, who with the win extended his streak to 25 straight match wins on clay. "He is good on all sides -- forehand, backhand, everywhere -- and he has a beautiful serve. What I must do is play him very deep, keep putting pressure on him all the time, because if I lower my intensity, then I'll be out of the match. It?s an important match for me because Safin is one of the best players."

Schuettler says the result on clay is no surprise to him.

"I have played well on clay," Schuettler said. "I played last 16 of Roland Garros last year, I played quarters in Rome, so I know that I can play well on clay. What surprised me the most is that I beat, in this tournament, three former No. 1 players."

Coria and Schuettler have met twice, with Coria winning their first match-up in straight sets at the 2002 French Open, and the German winning a hard-fought three-setter in round robin play at last year's Masters Cup on hardcourt.

In the doubles final, unseeded Henman/Zimonjic (d. (5)Damm/Suk 6-4, 7-6(5) in the semifinals) will face (7)Etlis/Rodriguez.

NEWS, NOTES, QUOTES AND BARBS
If you are service by Comcast cable in the U.S. and want The Tennis Channel, give them a call today, word on the street is they are being deluged by calls and are close to breaking down...Apparently the formerly-retired Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario will play doubles at the tour stops beginning in May in Berlin, Rome, Roland Garros, and Wimbledon with Spanish countrywoman Anabel "Funky Cold" Medina Garrigues as tune-ups for the Athens Olympics...Hey WTA San Diego, how does it feel to be left out of the USTA's US Open Series? "It's a good initiative for the U.S. and for those tournaments who joined up, but the USTA's offer to us wasn't good enough," co-owner Raquel Giscafre told tr.net. "We are the only Tier I women's tournament in the summer and didn't want to be lumped in with the others. We already had a TV deal with ESPN and we didn't want give up any other rights."...Funny that Anastasia Myskina, who has been described as, err, "difficult," saw Martina Hingis as "sweet": "Martina took the right decision (to retire). She wasn't only the number one, she was the sweetest girl of the world too. During years, she's been at the top. An injury didn't let her to give the maximum. It surely emphasized her reflection about the future orientation of the game, always with more power. And after that injury, it would have been hard to come back at her former level. She couldn't be satisfied by being the No. 8 or 10. I understand that a girl who has been No. 1 don't accept performances who aren't as good as they were before."...The E! entertainment network is putting together one of their "true Hollywood story" features about the Williams sisters...Less than 4% of ATP Fantasy Tennis players have Rainer Schuettler in their line-up this week, while 76% have Guillermo Coria...As expected, the Euro ATP tournament directors are lashing out at the ATP and the USTA for creating the US Open Series, drawing players away from the European ATP events during the U.S. summer hardcourt swing. Says Masters Series-Monte Carlo Tournament Director Patrice Dominguez, speaking to the AFP: "I had on the phone 25 out of 32 of the tournament directors for three reasons. First, to protect the integrity of the claycourt tournaments in Europe in July. We have a swing and we want to keep its as strong as possible. We think that the creation of this (US Open) series could be a threat for the tournaments in Europe in July. The second point is the integrity of the Masters Series has to be protected for the tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati. We do not accept the fact that there would be confusion between some tournaments who belong to the tour and the other tournaments. We don't want a tour inside the tour. The last point is we do not want the creation of a bonus inside the tour necessarily attached to a new ranking. We have enough problems having two rankings today (ATP Champions Race and Entry System), not to have a third one for six tournaments during the year. We want to have a global vision, not a regional tour...(ATP CEO Mark Miles) went to the negotiating table without telling us anything."
