Venus Scrapes By, Capriati Crushed in WTA Berlins Semis

Posted on May 7, 2004

No. 3 seed Venus Williams extended her win streak to 15 matches Saturday, trailing 0-3 in the final set against unseeded Croatian Karolina "The Spreminator" Sprem before storming back to win 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the Berlin championship match.

Earlier in the day, No. 2 seed Amelie Mauresmo advanced to her third Berlin final by spanking No. 6 seed Jennifer Capriati 6-2, 6-0 in 53 minutes.

The final will be the first meeting between the two since last year on clay at Warsaw, where Venus was forced to retire in the third set of the final after injuring her abdominal muscles, a injury which would haunt her for the remainder of the year. That was the first win for Mauresmo over Venus in six meetings.
