Safin Wins in Racquet-Breaking Spectacle at ATP Hamburg
Posted on May 12, 2004
Unseeded Marat Safin showed the fire that could have him challenging for No. 1 by the end of the year, in Hamburg Monday breaking a racket, gaining a code violation warning, and ousting No. 8 seed Sebastien Grosjean 7-6(6), 7-5 on the red clay, showing fine form just weeks before the French Open."It was a pain in the ass to stay there and try to struggle," said Safin, frustrated with the low quality of play from himself and the Frenchman. "It was a nightmare to play this kind of tennis. He should have won that first set."
Safin came back from 2-5 down in the first set, at one point breaking his racquet when he slammed it on the court, then smashing it into the net post while walking to his chair.
