Roddick Edges Baby Goran at ATP Queen's

Posted on June 11, 2004

World No. 2 Andy Roddick fought back a three-set challenge from Croatian Mario "Baby Goran" Ancic 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-4 Thursday at the ATP stop at Queen's to move into the round of 16 in an effort to defend his title from 2003.

"He didn't give me any looks at his serve today," Roddick said. "He was hitting all his spots -- first and second serve, but I was pretty pleased with the way I was playing as well. I felt I had a couple of chances that I didn't take full advantage of, but it's not like they were sitters. That kind of match you just have to stay the course and wait for an opening."

Roddick beat Greg Rusedski, Taylor Dent, Andre Agassi, and Sebastien Grosjean en route to the title in 2003.

Brit wildcard Ian Flanagan was brought back to Earth by (5)Grosjean, taking a 6-2, 6-0 beating after previously upending former Wimbledon finalist Mark Philippoussi and Victor Hanescu, who in the previous round had beaten former Wimbledon winner Goran Ivanisevic.

Other seeded winners on the day were (6)Lleyton Hewitt (d. (Q)Murray in two tiebreaks, with the Brit holding six set points in the first and one in the second), (7)Paradorn Srichaphan (d. The quarterfinals at Queen's line up as Andreev vs. (6)Hewitt, (1)Roddick vs. (7)Srichaphan, (5)Grosjean vs. (15)Stepanek, and (Q)Lee vs. Beck.

When will there be an ESPN revolt? You've got to think it's coming. You've got a group on tennis-savvy commentators and front-line people who realize fans want to see matches like Guillermo Coria vs. Carlos Moya rather than another tape of Serena, but apparently the clueless production staff have all the power. Something has to give, maybe at Wimbledon?...While other dirtballers skip the lawns, Guillermo Coria says Wimbledon is part of his master plan to end the year at No. 1. Don't bet against him: "If my objective is being able to conquer the top spot in the world, I must play at Wimbledon. I even must do my best there. That is why I came here at the Queen's as fast as possible, it's part of my preparation. It's also a way for me to forget about Roland Garros and rediscover my serenity ahead of the British Grand Slam. What I would like most in the long-term would be come back to Paris next year as world number one and take my revenge. But I don't want to be obsessed by this idea because there are a lot of other challenges such as the Olympics and the US Open before that."...Boris Becker says Tim Henman has no shot at winning Wimbledon: "He's not the No. 1 player in the world but he plays above his level every year when Wimbledon comes. On his very, very best day, he's going to reach the semifinal."...Vancouver has been granted a "Tier V" WTA event in August...Those confirmed thus far for the ATP LA event in July include three-time champ Andre Agassi, Mardy Fish, Taylor Dent, Vince Spadea, Robby Ginepri, Bob and Mike Bryan, and last year's finalists Wayne Ferreira and Lleyton Hewitt...The Brits, like the Americans, are fattening up, according to news.com.au: "The All England Lawn Tennis Club is being forced to increase the size of its centre court seats to accommodate ever fatter spectators. Many fans, keen to watch the exertions of lithe players, are unable to squeeze their generous proportions on to just one seat. After receiving a soaring number of complaints about the size of the seats, the Wimbledon authorities have decided to include larger seating in their $265.25 million (U.S.) development plan for the court."...Maggie Maleeva says the WTA schedule is burning out players, such as the Belgians: "Their bodies were telling them they had had enough, as I see it, and it's certain we all play too much. No other sport plays for 11 months a year. It is too much mentally and physically for the players. They need a three-month break."
