Grinning Greg Rusedski Through in ATP Indianapolis Opener

Posted on July 20, 2004

Former US Open runner-up Greg Rusedski kept his summer hardcourt momentum alive Monday with an opening-round 7-6(5), 6-7(3), 6-4 win over Swedish veteran Thomas Johansson at Indianapolis.

"We always play very close matches," Rusedski said. "He's a great player. You don't win the Australian Open by fluke. He's been Top 10 in the world, so I knew I was going to have a tough match."

Rusedski was leading 2-0 in the second-set breaker before double faulting on his serve, beginning some sloppy play to hand the Swede the second set.

"I was a little tired," Rusedski said. "When I double faulted, that broke my momentum. He got some confidence and after 2-0 he was the better player. Breaking at 5-4 (in the third) was really satisfying to me because I played such a solid game."

Rusedski, who had 19 aces to 12 doubles, will now face No. 11 seed Joachim "Not Thomas" Johansson.

"I think I'm getting better with every match," Rusedski said. "I'm starting to get that mental toughness and match toughness that I was lacking the first part of this year."

Earlier this month Rusedski captured his first title since being cleared of doping charges by the ATP, winning on the grass at Newport.

In the only other matches on the day, Frenchman Thierry Ascione beat American Jeff Salzenstein, while local American wildcard Rajeev Ram edged Wesley Moodie 7-6 in the third.

NEWS, NOTES, QUOTES AND BARBS
Jelena Dokic on wacky dad Damir: "I don't know what his aim is -- if he's trying to screw me up, I think that's pretty sad. In an ideal world, everybody would like to have a family that's all together, but I think this is asking for too much in my situation. I don't talk to him and I have nothing to do with him anymore. I cannot get much lower than I am at the moment. We will see what happens, whether I go down or not. It's not easy to deal with these things, but I have to find a way."...Maggie Maleeva got hitched to long-time boyfriend Lyubomir Noko in Sofia in July, with Conchita Martinez among the guests...The USTA and The Tennis Channel announced a cable and satellite television partnership that includes a four-year commitment for live weekday and select weekend coverage of the US Open Series through 2007...Olympic skip-mates Andre Agassi and Lleyton Hewitt have committed to playing the ATP stop in Washington during the Olympic week. Agassi has also committed to playing Long Island the week before the Open, but that will likely be just another stop on his summer pull-out tour (see: Indianapolis) with the bad hip...For more evidence of racquet technology demanding more of the players and causing more injuries, just look at the list of players who have recently pulled from events citing hip injuries: Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick, Gustavo Kuerten, Magnus Norman (all former No. 1 or No. 2 players by the way)...The 2004 US Open sweatshirt will cost you $52 freaking dollars this year, what's the mark-up on that? No wonder the USTA has to open Swiss bank accounts...Anyone notice that the USTA almost completely eliminated the ATP signage during the LA final? This is like a hostile takeover. The USTA has the cash, they're getting tennis on TV, they get the signage apparently...Maria "Grunt-o-rama" Sharapova is hanging tough at No. 11 on the Yahoo! most popular searches. One of the few rankings where you'll find no Russians in the Top 10...SI.com's Jon Wertheim says: "How would a tennis commissioner rule: (Maria) Sharapova announces her withdrawal from the Carson event citing a need for "rest" but then plays World Team Tennis the following night." We think they'd rule in her favor since you read her media release saying she was favoring her commitment to pal Billie Jean King to play WTT. Nice...Al "The Dropshot Dragon" Portas is 3-15 thus far in 2004...Remember back in 1990 when the ATP Tour wrested men's tennis away from the Men's Tennis Council? Some think the ATP is now ripe for the plucking, and no one wants to take control more than the International Tennis Federation (ITF) that run the slams. From The Guardian: "If this was not all complicated enough there is a further political subplot, that of the intense rivalry between the ATP and the ITF. The latter has seethed while watching what it and many other observers consider to be the inept way the ATP, which has yet to sign up to the Wada code, has handled the "nandrolone scandal" -- which, if unresolved, will soon enter its third year. The damage to tennis is unquantifiable, with the ITF scornful of what it perceives as the ATP's public-relations-exercise attitude of so-called independent investigation and a supplement task force. Mutual admiration is not high, with the ATP attempting to hold its ground under growing pressure from outside and within." Look out...While Venus did the old "I lost because I didn't play well" after the Stanford final, you have to admit she was gracious and smiley through the whole aftermath. I do enjoy playing fun tennis, and it's good to do something you still love. My days of playing tennis on the ATP Tour are over, but it's nice to get out and hit some balls every few months."...Gael Monfils, the French teenager who has won the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon junior singles titles this year, might not play the US Open, skipping the possibility of becoming only the second junior ever to win the junior slam (after Stefan Edberg in 1983): "My objective is to win the main draw, not the juniors," Monfils said. "I'm not here just to be a junior. So maybe in two or three years I will hold the trophy." Kid, in hindsight that is going to be a dumb-ass move...Can U.S. Davis Cup captain Patrick McEnroe slam Mardy Fish more in the media? "The question to me is again, is how badly does he want it," P-Mac told reporters in a Davis Cup media conference last month. "When I say that, it's how badly does he want to get to the next level. I think he's a Top 10 potential player by the end of the year, but to get from No. 18 to No. 10 is a tough stretch."
