Teen Nadal Wins First ATP Title at Sopot

Posted on August 16, 2004

No. 6-seeded Spaniard Rafael "The Prodigy" Nadal, who missed almost three months of play beginning in April with an ankle injury, fulfilled his promise Sunday at Sopot with his first ATP title after a 6-3, 6-4 win over unseeded Argentine Jose Acasuso.

Despite playing two singles and a doubles match on Saturday, The Prodigy showed no sign of fatigue in Sunday's championship.

"I needed a tournament win like this after my injury, I just hope that it's not the last one," said the 18-year-old. "After this tournament, I'll be in the Top 50. To see me in 70th place after being 30th before my injury, it wasn't
easy."

In the doubles final, Czechs (1)Cermak/Friedl outlasted (4)Garcia/Prieto 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 for their second title of the year.
