Top-seeded Lindsay Davenport pulled an "Andre Agassi" on Monday at the WTA stop in New Haven, pulling from the event after citing tendinitis in her wrist.

"Not being able to return to New Haven is a major disappointment for me," Davenport said in a written statement. "The pain and risk of further injury have made it impossible for me to play."

There was one upset Monday with Croat Jelena Kostanic taking out (6)Maggie Maleeva, while two other seeds moved into the second round in (5)Nadia Petrova (d. (Q)Black) and (8)Nathalie dechy (d. Magui "Don't Call Me Maggie" Serna).

Un-seeds winning through were Spanish qualifier Marta Marrero (d. (Q)Sybille "The Whammer" Bammer), wildcard Lisa Raymond (d. Dinara "Little Sis" Safina in three), Japan's Akiko Morigami (d. (Q)Talaja in three), Serb Jelena Jankovic (d. (Q)Nagyova), and American wildcard Mashona "Little Sis" Washington (d. Shaughnessy).

On today in New Haven are Lee-Waters vs. Hantuchova, Bovina vs. Marrero, Capriati vs. Golovin, and Washington vs. Sharapova.

All Martins Out of the Pool at ATP Long Island
It was a bad day to be named Martin at the ATP stop in Long Island Monday, where all three seeds in action moved into the second round in (5)Juan Ignacio Chela (d. Beck), (8)Fernando Verdasco (d. A.Martin 6-1 in the third) and (10)Jurgen "Tuna" Melzer (d. (WC)T.Martin in three).

Un-seeds into the second round were South African retiree Wayne Ferreira (d. D.Sanchez), slumping American Jan-Mike Gambill (d. (LL)Gasquet in two breakers), Swedish vet Thomas Enqvist (d. Julien "United Colors of" Benneteau), and Frenchman Michael Llodra (d. Sargsian).

"I love playing this tournament," Jan-Mike said. "It is presented very well. I enjoy the surface and the food is the best on tour."

Gambill, who has not reached a semifinal this year, will be in danger of surveying the player buffet at Challenger events in 2005.

On court Tuesday at Strong Island are Andreev vs. Costa, Nieminen vs. (WC)Ginepri, (LL)Olivier "Mucus" Mutis vs. (2)Hewitt, (4)Paradorn "The Thai Fighter" Srichaphan vs. (Q)K.Kim, (9)Luis "Me So" Horna vs. (Q)Alexander "My Serve Has" Popp, (6)Mario "Baby Goran" Ancic vs. Tursunov, (Q)Hippensteel vs. Davydenko, (LL)Elsner vs. (7)Joachim "The Jackhammer" Johansson, and in the featured night match, Ferrer vs. (Q)Koubek. Just kidding.
