Two-Time Defending Champ Srichaphan On Task at ATP Long Island

Posted on August 26, 2004

No. 4 seed Paradorn "The Thai Fighter" Srichaphan defeated unseeded South African veteran Wayne Ferreira 7-6(3), 7-5 Wednesday at the ATP stop in Long Island, looking to resurrect his season with a successful title defense.

"I always have a good match with Wayne," The Thai Fighter said. "He moves really well. It was fun to put on a good show for the crowd, they were really into it. I like the courts here, the atmosphere."

Srichaphan won the grasscourt title at Nottingham, but has not reached a quarterfinal at a Masters Series event or a slam on the year.

Other winners on the day were (7)Joachim "The Jackhammer" Johansson (d. (Q)Koubek), (10)Jurgen "Tuna" Melzer (d. Andreev), and unseeded Cali-Russian Dmitry Tursunov, extending American Jan-Mike Gambill's season of decline with a win in three tiebreaks.

Thursday's schedule at Strong Island is Davydenko vs. (8)Verdasco, Llodra vs. (2)Hewitt, (9)Luis "Me So" Horna vs. Nieminen, and (5)Chela vs. Enqvist.

Raymond Ousts Petrova, Advances to Quarters at WTA New Haven
Well-placed wildcard Lisa Raymond ousted No. 5 seed Nadia Petrova in three sets Wednesday, proving the only upset on the day at the WTA stop in New Haven.

"Maybe the less pressure that I put on myself, when I just go out there and play freely, obviously, the better tennis I play," Raymond said. Or maybe you're just a head case.

There were two seeded winners on the day in (2)Elena Dementieva (d. Schaul) and (8)Nathalie Dechy (d. Morigami in three), and two other unseeded winners in Daniela "The Former Walking Stick" Hantuchova (d. (LL)Irvin in three) and Serb Jelena Jankovic (d. Kostanic).

The line-up for Thursday's quarterfinals are Bovina vs. Washington, Hantuchova vs. Raymond, Jankovic vs. Dementieva, and Capriati vs. Dechy.

This Crappy Tournament is Still Going On
Four winners at the Tier V WTA stop in Forest Hills Wednesday in (2)Emilie Loit (d. Barna in three), Iveta "Not Have to Play Here Again" Benesova (d. (WC)Kobak), Katarina Srebotnik (d. Garbin), and Kirsten Flipkens (d. Camerin).

"Someone kill me," we imagine a player saying in a press conference, if anyone had sent press to this seemingly experimental 16-draw event. "Kill me now. Here, take my racquet. Beat me about the head and shoulders."

Thursday's quarterfinals line up as Anabel "Funky Cold" Medina Garrigues vs. Brandi, Flipkens vs. Loit, Likhovtseva vs. Bartoli, and Srebotnik vs. Benesova.

Talented French teen Richard Gasquet continues to have issues in 2004. In addition to mental instability and feigning injuries, Gasquet can now add getting defaulted to his tribulations. Wednesday, up a set but down a break in the second to Michael Russell in their qualifying match, Gasquet inadvertently flicked his racquet behind him, leaving his hand and accidently striking a linesmen in the head. The umpire first called a warning, then later realized the situation and promptly defaulted the Frenchmen as the injured linesman began to bleed...In town at the Open already are Andy Roddick, who was practicing Wednesday on the Arthur Ashe Stadium with Andre Agassi, and Roger Federer, Carlos Moya, Marat Safin and Kim Clijsters who was back on court having a mild workout during her recovery...According to the most recent Sports Business Journal, the year-end WTA Championships will remain in L.A. in 2005. Early word was the event was moving to China, but Daniel Kaplan reports that event owners AEG and Octagon were not confident that China's Tom.com would be able to properly sponsor the tournament and thus blocked the move, keeping it at the Staples Center, where it has struggled mightily the last two years...Washington finalist Gilles Muller slumped in qualifying Wednesday, losing in three sets to Danai Udomchoke. Muller was the last guy to not make the main draw cut...Vancouver winner Nicole Vaidisova rolled in her first qualifying match...Mardy Fish pondering whether he'll take his silver medal from the Athens Olympics on tour like some of his friends on the Tampa Bay Lightning did with the Stanley Cup: "They get like a day with (the Cup). A couple guys took it to Bennigans. I don't think I'm going to take it to Bennigans or anything like that. Maybe I'll wave it in their face a little bit. They don't have a medal. They can't get a medal...Actually, they probably can...They probably have gold medals. I can't do that. Never mind."...Mardy Fish on crying on the medal stand during the Olympics: "I think that the Olympics is the biggest thing, and a gold medal is the biggest prize in sports. And I felt like if, you know, if I heard the (U.S.) National Anthem, and I felt like some tears would come there as well. Sure enough, they came, but it was a song that I had never heard of."...Misty May's father, Robert May, was teammates in 1968 with Winthrop "Wink" Davenport, the father of 1996 Olympic tennis gold medalist Lindsay Davenport. May's late mother, Barbara, played tennis at UCLA, and May's cousin, Taylor Dent, was a member of the 2004 U.S. Olympic tennis team...From ESPN on Serena's upcoming fashion debut at the US Open: "Serena has decided, with the help of Nike's "Hey, Why Don't We Make Knockoff Doc Martens?" division to wear boots. Well, not boots exactly, but sneakers with an outer sleeve that give the impression that she is wearing boots. And not just regular old boots. Not work boots, Wellingtons or hip-waders. Go-go boots. Yes, she has decided that as her fashion statement for the US Open, she wants to look like the most unsettling Nixon campaign volunteer ever."...17-year-old African-American Scoville Jenkins on facing Andy Roddick in the first round of the US Open, as told to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: "'Wow!', that was my reaction," said Jenkins, who got a wildcard into the Open for his title at the USTA Boys 18 National Championships in Kalamazoo, Mich. "That's probably the greatest stage in tennis, and to play the defending champion my first time there, it's excitement. It will be my first time, and I'll take it all in, and I'm going to go out and try to win like playing any other person. I know he's a great player, but I'm not going out there overwhelmed."...ESPN's Greg Garber is going with Lindsay Davenport in New York: "Clearly, Davenport has the big game that can win on the speedy courts in Flushing, N.Y. It happened in 1998, and she has been close -- with a finals appearance, three semifinals and a quarterfinal -- in the intervening five years. Based on empirical evidence, as well as nostalgic sentiment, she is the favorite coming in." Not going to happen Greg, but looking forward to the "Ugly American in NY" during the Open...Upset-causers thus far in the men's qualifying draw at the US Open are France's Marc Gicquel (d.
