Only one upset on the men's side on the opening day at the US Open, with Belgian Olivier "The Roach" Rochus ousting the back-too-soon-from-injury No. 27 Mario "Baby Goran" Ancic in straight sets."You see upsets all the time. Everyone can play now," said Ancic, discounting his recent injury problems. "He had all the answers for my game."
It was the third consecutive first-round loss for the Croat since reaching the semifinals at Wimbledon.
World No. 1 Roger Federer eased into the second round with a straight-set win over injury-addled Spaniard Al Costa in straight sets.
"I lost the last two times I played him, once on clay, once on hard," Federer said. "He knows how to beat me."

Serena Wins, Spreminator, Shaughnessy Out on Day One at US Open
Two upsets on the women's side on the opening day at the US Open in (18)Karolina "The Spreminator" Sprem (l. to Kostanic in three) and (32)Meghann Shaughnessy (l. to Bartoli).
Two seeds lost, but five others came perilously close in (6)Elena "The Diagnosis is" Dementieva (d. Dinara "Little Sis" Safina in three), (8)Jennifer Capriati (d. "It was a little bit scary there in the beginning," said Capriati, who actually used different racquets at different ends of the court. "I had to make some adjustments, trying to find my range a little bit, and the wind was pretty difficult. One side, you would hit the ball, and it seemed like it would go 10 feet out. On the other side, you couldn't get it past the service line."
Other seeds into the second round were (2)Amelie Mauresmo (d. Irvin), (3)Serena (d. Kleinova in her horrendous dominatrix-in-boots get-up), (10)Vera "Warren" Zvonareva (d. "Her outfit? I tried not to look at it," said Kleinova on the Serena spectacle of black "boots" (essentially leg warmers over shoes, removed after the warm-up), dominatrix-style top and super-short denim skirt. "It's her style. She always wears something special."
Would Kleinova consider wearing such a get-up?
"No," Kleinova said. "I'm not that kind of person. It's her style. At least it's better than the (pink outfit) she wore at the French Open. My friend played her there and couldn't stop laughing."
Un-seeds advancing were Russian Vera Douchevina (d. Kapros), Gisela "Sgt." Dulko (d. Tanasugarn), Magui "Don't Call Me Maggie" Serna (d. (Q)Drake), qualifier Eleni Linetskaya (d. Todd Martin was given the mic after announcing his retirement, but the mic wasn't working at first; fitting that TM retired in front of about 200 day session hold-overs, while Andre Agassi was playing in front of an announced 23,019 -- always in his fellow American's shadows, even in retirement...Nicolas "The Golden Child" Massu, Mardy "Silver" Fish and Fernando "Gonzo" Gonzalez paraded about the center court with their medals during the opening night festivities Monday at the Open. Where is former NYC mayor David Dinkins when you need him? Players have been complaining about the noisy planes flying above the grounds, where is the love Michael Bloomberg...Yankee star and true "A-Rod" Alex Rodriguez was also in attendance at the Open Monday night...Bad sign for the Brits as Greg Rusedski and Alex Bogdanovic both lost in five sets Monday, Tim Henman would complete the triumverate...After a hot weekend, temps are supposed to cool into the low 80s for the rest of the week...What was more annoying on USA Network's Monday night coverage: commentator Tracy Austin's incessant bragging about picking Maria Sharapova over Serena in the Wimbledon final, or Serena's look-at-me-I-need-attention Nike "boots" stunt? The taped "tribute" to the ever-annoying Michael Barkan, or Serena's dominatrix outfit with the micro-mini denim skirt? How about watching USA Network repeatedly switch to the Todd Martin-Fabrice Santoro match and pretending it's live coverage? Nice. Fans aren't idiots, there is such a thing as the internet...Watching the Serena match, is there a 4.5 male viewer who thought they couldn't beat Sandra Kleinova?...How happy were we to see John McEnroe hit the booth after that typical under-an-hour Serena match, with the nails-on-chalkboard Tracy Austin in the booth and Jim Courier smirking and trying to quip in the studio? Whew! Talk about a freaking tropical storm of fresh air when Mac arrived...And how "Awesome!", to use the Arthur Ashe Kid's Day-speak, was that USA Network technology where a freeze frame of the player was left on the screen every time they hit the ball during a point? That thing is pretty cool, as raise to whoever came up with that...USA Network commentator Ted Robinson needs to stop giving away his lack of tennis knowledge by saying things like (to paraphrase) "(Andre) Agassi won Cincinnati beating the kind of Top 50 players you'd normally beat in winning a Slam." Ted that was much tougher than winning a slam, where the winners frequently get cake-like draws en route to a couple tough matches before the title. Do the numbers, average the ranked opponents...Also Ted, saying "Agassi chose not to play the Olympics" is also wrong, he couldn't play the Olympics because he had not played the requisite number of Davis Cup matches to qualify...Where does Jim Courier get a crazy stat like Andre Agassi's opponents move 20 percent more than he does during a match?...More on American Todd Martin announced his retirement amidst some tears after his loss to Fabrice "The Original Magician" Santoro Monday: "This might be a big mistake, I'm going to be in tears in a moment," he told the spectators, who gave him the standing-o. "It's been a pleasure playing in front of you. I'm one of the lucky guys who ran into some people who knew a lot about the game, cared and shared their knowledge with me. Otherwise I would never have been here in the first place. I thank you all." When a spectator shouted, "What are you going to do now?," Martin replied: "Sleep."...Greg Rusedski took some shots at the ATP Monday after his first round loss at the US Open. Rusedski's ranking fell out of the Top 100 after a prolonged court case after failed drug accusations by the ATP, and the Brit has had problems getting into ATP-level events: "I'm fed up with saying nothing about the situation when the ATP have not done anything to help me," said Rusedski, who was denied wildcards at Washington and Long Island prior to the Open. "I've tried to talk to (ATP CEO) Mark Miles but he says it is up to the tournaments."...Serena's boots don't meet the "customary tennis attire" rule, US Open tournament referee Brian Earley and tournament director Jim Curley determined. How is that, since they are basically just snap-on leg warmers? Nice choke by USTA officials. Serena on the boots: "This is a 'Rebel Without a Cause Line.' There's no cause for me to be such a rebel that I'm being right now." We don't even have a response to that, because we don't know what it means. If I was a USTA official and heard that I would have immediate drug tested her...Marcos "Bombs Over" Baghdatis became the first Cypriot to win a match in the main draw of a Grand Slam event when he beat Frenchman Olivier "Mucus" Mutis Monday...Former President George Bush was a spectator at the US Open Monday...The U.S. Postal Service unveiled the image of Arthur Ashe for a 37-cent stamp during opening ceremonies Saturday at the US Open...World No. 1 doubles team the Bryan brothers are in danger of losing their top ranking during the two weeks at the US Open, just two points ahead of the Bahamiam/Canuck team of Mark Knowles/Daniel Nestor.
