Opening Day Yawn Sees Safina Advance to Face Serena at WTA Beijing
Posted on September 21, 2004
With former No. 1 Serena Williams, US Open champ Svetlana Kuznetsova and Wimbledon winner Maria Sharapova in the draw, you'd think the WTA Beijing event could give fans something to remember on Day One.Instead the best fans got Monday was No. 6 seed Gisela "Sgt." Dulko, who advanced into the second round with a win over Hungary's Aniko Kapros, needless to say leaving fans...hungry for more. Sorry.
Other winners on the day were un-seeds Dinara "Little Sis" Safina (d. (WC) Yan to advance to a meeting with Serena) and Tatiana "The Pocket Baseliner" Panova (d. Pisnik who retired with a left neck strain) of Russia, Venezuela's Maria Vento-Kabchi (d. Flavia "Of the Day" Pennetta), and Anabel "Funky Cold" Medina Garrigues (d. Obata).
The last round of qualifying was also completed, with Sanda Mamic (CRO), Na Li (CHN), Vera Douchevina (RUS), and Emmanuelle Gagliardi (SUI) into the big dance.
On court Tuesday are Pratt vs. N.Li, Sun vs. Mamic, Tanasugarn vs. Dokic, Douchevina vs. Barna, and Brandi vs. Gagliardi.
Davis Cup Qualifying Previews: Morocco at Australia, Japan at Chile
Tennis-X will take a look at two Davis Cup qualifying matches per day leading to the beginning of play on Friday, Sept. 24. Four countries will advance to the World Group, while the four losers will wallow for at least another year in the minor leagues of Davis Cup zonal play.
The eight qualifying matches this weekend are Morocco at Australia, Japan at Chile, Belgium at Croatia, Czech Republic at Paraguay, Germany at Slovak Republic, Great Britain at Austria, Canada at Romania, and Thailand at Russia.
Today's previews: Morocco at Australia, Japan at Chile
Morocco at Australia
Site: Royal Kings Park, West Perth, AUS
Surface: Grass (outdoors)
Ball: Slazenger Grasscourt UV Hydroguard
This was at least a match before Younes El Aynaoui pulled with his chronic foot problem and Hicham Arazi said he wouldn't play because the Moroccan federation wasn't paying him enough (actually when he felt he wasn't making enough bank for his appearance said 'I'm injured').
Now Lleyton Hewitt and Aussie neophyte Todd Reid will take to the grass against a who's who of Moroccans in Mehdi Ziadi, Mounir El Aarej, Talal Ouahabi, and Mehdi Tahiri. Yikes. If there was a Davis Cup rule that your opponents had to have a player within the Top 400 in singles, this would be a walkover for Australia.
Japan at Chile
Site: Club Naval de Campo Las Salinas, Vina del Mar, CHI
Surface: Red Clay (outdoors)
Ball: Penn Championship (Black Seal)
Another enormous mismatch, with Japan's finest in Gouichi Motomura, Takao Suzuki, Takahiro Terachi, and Thomas Shimada taking to the foreign red clay against Athens Olympics heroes Fernando "Gonzo" Gonzalez and Nicolas "The Golden Child" Massu.
While the Japanese should be lauded for fighting their way to the World Group playoff round, one player in the Top 200 is not going to cut it, much less on the Chilean red clay. Time to hoist the surrender flag and go home.

TENNIS-X NEWS, NOTES, QUOTES AND BARBS
What's Roger Federer been doing since winning the US Open? Believe it or not, the Swiss star has been spending some quiet time on the West Coast of the U.S. with girlfriend Mirka Vavrinec. The couple even spent a few evenings in Las Vegas prior to heading to the Bangkok event which begins on Monday...Wimbledon movie star Paul Bettany: "John McEnroe saw it and he was very pleased with it. The girl who won Wimbledon (Maria Sharapova) seemed to be very pleased with it as well. We did our best." Next time try not to have top Brit players contesting matches on outer courts, apparently not a lot when into the research department...The heads of the Israel Tennis Association decided to let fans in for free in their tie against Finland: "Our home court advantage is only useful if fans are on hand," said ITA chairman Dr. Ian Froman. "If only a few hundred fans turn up, it'll be depressing for our players."...Romanian Andrei Pavel says he will play in the Davis Cup tie against Canada after injuring his back at the US Open: "Yesterday I played my first two-set training match with full-power services," Pavel said. "Today I woke up without pain."...Maria "Grunt-o-rama" Sharapova will reportedly be paid $5 million to endorse a perfume bearing her name. The impending deal was revealed Sept. 1 by ESPN.com's Darren Rovell. "This is a great opportunity for me to do something creative and fun," Sharapova said in a statement. "I love the world of fashion, and I'm looking forward to experiencing it firsthand."...Kim Clijsters writing on her website on returning to play next week: "Good news from the doctors. The wrist should now be completely recovered. When I am practicing with more intensity, I still feel some pain, but that is quite normal...nevertheless, I will try and prepare as thoroughly as possible for the Hasselt tournament. In the last few days, I have been training fairly hard. Maybe still a little more cautiously than before, more in control. My backhand isn't completely what it should be, but I guess that won't take long now. Every time I hit the ball I still feel some pain, which should be due to the scar tissue only. Nothing to worry about, the doctors told me. Over the next few days, I will be increasing my training sessions. I will try to get ready as good as possible for the Gaz de France Stars tournament in Hasselt. It looks like it is going to be a beautiful tournament. Participating will not be easy for me after all those months without tennis. But I look forward to playing again and especially to be back in Belgium."...American doubles specialist Mike Bryan has labral tears in both hips, likely requiring eventual hip surgery, and currently requiring pain-killers to play...New ground was broken Monday for Britain's 39m National Tennis Centre in Roehampton...Word is that Martin "Berzerk" Verkerk will undergo shoulder surgery...Looks like Rainer Schuettler (flu) and Nicolas Kiefer (injury) will miss Germany's Davis Cup qualifying tie, leaving the work to Tommy Haas and Florian "Oscar" Mayer...Revisiting Vince Spadea's meltdown after losing in the Delray Beach final to Ricardo Mello "Yello": "That's a player I should beat. He hasn't posted great results in the past, and I think he's a long way from setting any big milestones. Players like Stefan Koubek won this tournament, a player who hasn't gone to win any Grand Slams. I remember a few years ago (Davide) Sanguinetti beat (Andy) Roddick in this final. Those two names have different sounds to them. I just don't see a guy who's 5-9-1/2 that doesn't have an incredible weapon on any side being...you know, I don't want this to sound like sour grapes because I was saying this before. But I guess you can't measure a guy's heart or will or work ethic. That in itself can be a great weapon." Vincenzo, playing the sour grapes card...Kirsten Dunst on the Wimbledon movie London premier: "Nothing compares to Spider-Man. There were twice as many people there. That was overwhelming. But I always love coming to London. It's very exciting."...New Zealand manager Patrick O'Rourke had a number of surprises when his team arrived in Pakistan for their Davis Cup zonal tie this week: "The court surface is a gritty grey dirt which has little resemblance to the European clay used on the ATP and WTA Tours," O'Rourke told New Zealand's Stuff news service. "The lines are chalk painted on the surface and disappear as soon as a player treads on the line...At this stage the facility looks just like a bay of club courts with the signage and seating yet to be placed around the main court." Good times...Lleyton Hewitt says he will be gunning to overtake Andy Roddick for the year-end No. 2 spot behind Roger Federer: "I'm playing extremely well. I'm back at No. 3 in the world now, got a chance to try and finish two, and it's been a good year."
