Myskina to Defend Moscow Title in Roland Garros Final RematchPosted on October 17, 2004 Anastasia Myskina, entering the WTA Moscow semifinals with an 0-4 career record versus Lindsay Davenport, got over the hump Saturday with a 6-4, 7-6(1) victory against the new No. 1-ranked American. "I wanted to keep the points short today as I wasn't feeling well," Davenport said. "I made too many errors at the wrong time as I had to go for the big shots because I knew I couldn't stay very long on the court today. I had a hard time with my chest and with my head. I wasn't 100 percent ready for the game today." Myskina had also been fighting a virus making the rounds during the week in Moscow. "We both were feeling sick, fortunately for me I think Lindsay just getting this virus while I was already on my way to recovery," said Myskina, the dead-ringer for rocker Marilyn Manson. "I was a bit nervous at the start and that's why I was arguing with the umpire all the time. I know probably I shouldn't have done that because umpires almost never change their minds." In the final Myskina will face Russian countrywoman Elena Dementieva in a rematch of this year's Roland Garros final. Dementieva beat fellow Russian Elena "Lena" Bovina 6-4, 7-5, and will bring a 1-3 record in finals this year into the Moscow championship match. "I think Elena has improved her game for sure," Myskina said on facing her friend in the final. "She reached the US Open final and then won a tournament in Belgium last month, so she is definitely on a roll." The doubles final will be (1) Virginia Ruano Pascual/Paola Suarez vs. (4) Myskina/Vera "The Crying Game" Zvonareva. |
