Players Get Catty Over Balls as WTA Championships Begin

Posted on November 10, 2004

Maria Sharapova (WTA)Three former/current No. 1s kick off play on day one Wednesday at the WTA Championships in L.A., with world No. 2 Amelie Mauresmo vs. Russian Vera "The Crying Game" Zvonareva, Serena Williams vs. French Open winner Anastasia Myskina, and world No. 1 Lindsay Davenport vs. 2004 French and US Open runner-up Elena Dementieva.

In the balance for Davenport and Mauresmo is the coveted year-end No. 1 ranking.

"I personally would loved to have a Grand Slam title (this year) and be competing for No. 1," Davenport said. "It's a little bit different of a feeling (without winning a slam)."

Mauresmo, No. 1 for five weeks earlier this year, can echo the American's slam-less woes but is still putting pressure on herself to finish the year on top -- which means plug in the choke-o-meter.

"I have a great opportunity even though Lindsay is still ahead," said Mauresmo, not known for maintaining her mental state in big matches. "She's been playing some great tennis the last six months, so she's not going to let it go. It's a good competition."

Injury question marks remain this week in L.A., foremost the shoulder of poster-child Maria "Cell Phone Mannequin" Sharapova, and Serena Williams' surgically-repaired knee.

This week the WTA is using the rock-like Tretorn balls, which Sharapova says are to blame for her injury.

"I do feel they're a bit heavy on my arm," said Sharapova of the ball used my many indoor events. The Russian is also not shy about throwing around her new-found clout. "It's something that the Tour and (WTA CEO) Larry Scott have to look into. I'm sure the tour doesn't want anybody injured. It's very important to help those players that are injured."

The pronouncement sent the WTA in to spin mode, with communication spokesman Darrell Fry saying "There's no correlation at all between player injuries and Tretorn balls. The health of our players is first and foremost in our minds. That's why we conducted blind tests with dozens of players last year to find the best ball, which turned out to be Tretorn...If there are complaints in the future, we'll look into them."

Mauresmo countered that Sharapova needs to suck it up and play ball.

"They are not much different to what we played with before," Mauresmo said of the balls. "Maria complained in Philly when she pulled out of our match but I didn't notice a difference. I don't feel they are heavier."

Let the games begin.

In the States, ESPN2 will show Wednesday coverage of the WTA Championships at 11 p.m., and Thursday at 5 p.m. and 11 p.m.

TENNIS-X NEWS, NOTES, QUOTES AND BARBS
Still trying to connect the dots in the Lleyton Hewitt-Kim Clijsters-Tatiana Golovin triumvirate. Was the 16-year-old French sensation Golovin the recipient of an early visit when Hewitt fled to Paris (not Hilton), France to "practice" early for the Masters Series-Paris? And how bold was it for Golovin to sit in Hewitt's box during his match, cheering for the Aussie? As one reporter queried Hewitt after he lost in Paris: "You seem in a really good mood although you lost a tough game...you seemed to have a nice time here in Paris." Just how nice a time? Now we hear from a former tour employee about a Golvin rendezvous in Tokyo earlier this year that was the impetus for the Clijsters break-up? It is slow going, but it will all come out eventually -- maybe on Kim's website?...No surprise with the Spanish Davis Cup team announcing it will lead with former No. 1s and French Open champs Carlos Moya and Juan Carlos Ferrero in singles, and Rafael "The Prodigy" Nadal/Tommy Robredo in doubles in the final against the U.S. in Spain. Prepare the red mud bog...The WTA has spread billboards of a leggy short-skirted Maria Sharapova all over L.A. in promoting the WTA Championships with the caption "The closer you sit, the hotter she gets." You can't beat tennis porn. Serena Williams says she is all for it: "I love her legs in this picture. Her legs are so sexy. She is not being sold in this picture. This is a hot picture. If you're not ready to sell pictures, then you shouldn't be part of the tournament. Unfortunately, I hate to say it, but sex sells."...ESPN Commentator Pam Shriver writing for ESPN the website yesterday: "This is the first year the Championships have had only eight players instead of 16." That's odd, since a review of last year's draw shows two round robin groups of four, with Kim Clijsters, Jennifer Capriati, Justine Henin-Hardenne and Amelie Mauresmo advancing to the semifinals. Bringing back any memories Pam? What event were you at?...In case you've been worrying that Serena Williams' ego has taken a beating in 2004, barely qualifying for the year-end championships and missing out on the race for No. 1, worry not, that 300 lb. gorilla remains intact: "It doesn't matter that I have no real shot at No. 1 because I feel like I have less pressure and it really doesn't matter. It's OK. It's like Tiger (Woods). It's weird when Tiger loses. It's kind of weird when I lose. It's definitely bigger news for me to lose. I make people's careers."...Ivan Ljubicic on his website announced he is marrying this hottie: http://ivan-ljubicic.com/hr/gal.asp?id=73. Well done...WTA Championships organizers said the event lost money last year, will lose money again this year, and they think they will have the event through at least 2006. Where can we invest in your business model?...According to USA Today, "The WTA will require the Top 50 players to sign agreements at the start of the 2005 season to play in specific tournaments that will be tied to the tour's $4 million bonus pool. If they don't play, they don't earn the bonus." About time. Now the ATP needs to figure out where they can find some scratch to re-institute their bonus pool to get their players to stop playing big-guarantee smaller events and exos, and blowing off the Masters Series events.
