Aussies Take 2-0 Davis Cup Lead; Dubai Decider for Davenport, SerenaPosted on March 4, 2005 Serena, Davenport One Match from Showdown at WTA DubaiTop-seeded Lindsay Davenport (d. (WC) Martinez) and No. 2 Serena Williams (d. Hantuchova) cruised into the semifinals in straight sets Thursday at the WTA stop in Dubai, one match away from a blockbuster world No. 1 vs. former No. 1 final. "I didn't want to get off to a slow start again, especially against someone like Daniela," Serena said after the 6-4, 6-3 win. "I moved better today, and I just think I was a little more focused. It's getting used to this court and the balls, and each day I get better." Also into the semis was No. 8 seed Patty Schnyder, who came from a set down to upset No. 3 Anastasia Myskina 6-7(0), 7-6(2), 6-2, and unseeded Serb Jelena Jankovic who ended the Cinderella run of Indian wildcard Sania Mirza 6-2, 6-2. "I'm really disappointed with my performance since Australia," Myskina said. "I'm (making) a lot of unforced errors and I'm really (not) confident on the court right now, but we can't play 365 days a year. We're human beings and can get tired or have a bad day. We can't just go on the court and be a robot." Mirza, playing on a twisted ankle, was blown out 6-2, 6-2 in 48 minutes. "I was just trying to do a bit too much," Mirza said. "To be honest, I really don't think I played that bad. She just made me look like that. She wasn't making any errors." Friday's semifinals are Davenport vs. Schnyder (the American has won six of their eight meetings, including the last five) and Serena vs. Jankovic (Williams won their only meeting last year in three sets), and in the doubles China's Yan/Zheng vs. Kuznetsova/Molik, and 2004 year-end No. 1s Ruano Pascual/Suarez vs. Hantuchova/Schiavone. Davis Cup Play Kicks Off Friday At the onset of 2005, few would have predicted Andre Agassi ending his five-year moratorium on the Davis Cup, while luminaries such as world No. 1 Roger Federer, Tim Henman and Carlos Moya opted out of the opening round (or all together) to concentrate on winning tour events. The Davis Cup World Group features the elite 16 tennis nations in the world, with this weekend's eight first-round matches ranging from the blowouts (ex: the Federer-less Switzerland vs. Netherlands) to thrillers such as Sweden at France and Croatia at the U.S. Here are Friday's singles openers, to be followed by the doubles on Saturday and the reverse singles Sunday: Spain at Slovak Republic Surface: Hard indoors Feliciano Lopez (ESP) vs. Karol Beck (SVK) Fernando Verdasco (ESP) vs. Dominik Hrbaty (SVK) Spanish captain Jordi Arrese saves Rafael "The Prodigy" Nadal for the Saturday doubles, with "fast court specialists" Feliciano "F-Lo" Lopez and Fernando "Hot Sauce" Verdasco in for the singles. "I came here two days ago and I haven't adapted to the surface yet," said Nadal, who will pair with Albert Costa in the doubles. "But I am fine with the captain's decision and I have absolutely no doubts in the strengths of Feliciano and Fernando." Netherlands at Switzerland Surface: Hard indoors Sjeng Schalken (NED) vs. Marco Chiudinelli (SUI) Peter Wessels (NED) vs. Stanislas Wawrinka (SUI) "If anyone has any queries about how to play a Dutch opponent, they can always ring me. I'm very willing to help," said Federer, who is bailing on the first round of the Davis Cup in protest of Switzerland's poor player development, having to carry the load himself for the last couple years. "The Swiss now have to work -- I hope they can win. But it would be quite extraordinary to win without me, It's always been up to me. The Davis Cup should be an interesting week for Swiss tennis and the future." If losing is interesting, it's going to be very interesting for the Swiss. Austria at Australia (Australia leads 2-0) Surface: Grass Lleyton Hewitt (AUS) d. Alexander Peya (AUT) 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 Wayne Arthurs (AUS) d. Jurgen Melzer (AUT) 7-6(5), 6-2, 6-4 "I was feeling pretty dodgy the first day I arrived," Arthurs said. "I got a good nights sleep Tuesday and Wednesday and got into the swing very quickly. To come out here with probably only two hours practice on this grass court, it makes it one of my most pleasing wins." Czech Republic at Argentina Surface: Clay outdoors Jiri Novak (CZE) vs. David Nalbandian (ARG) Tomas Berdych (CZE) vs. Guillermo Coria (ARG) "I'm very happy to play first," Novak said, trying to sound upbeat. "Argentina are very strong but we are going to do all we can to win and give everything on court." Chile at Russia Surface: Carpet indoors Fernando Gonzalez (CHI) vs. Mikhail Youzhny (RUS) Adrian Garcia (CHI) vs. Marat Safin (RUS) "We know that Chileans, like all South Americans, like slow surfaces so we'll make it super fast, even faster than we have at our annual Kremlin Cup tournament," said Russian captain Shamil Tarpishchev. "We're the home team so we have to make it count. I'm sure they would have done the same thing to us if we played them on their turf." Chile, without their top player, Nicolas Massu, out with a toe injury, is screwed. Sweden at France Surface: Clay indoors Joachim Johansson (SWE) vs. Paul-Henri Mathieu (FRA) Thomas Johansson (SWE) vs. Sebastien Grosjean (FRA) Grosjean returns after a thigh injury that forced him out of the Australian Open, and J. Johansson was doubtful until Monday with a shoulder injury. "Sebastien is getting better, which we could see during the training sessions," said French captain Guy Forget. "It would have been a mistake not having him in the squad. I'm looking forward to have him back on court. He trained pretty well and we are going to see a brand new player." Belarus at Romania Surface: Clay indoors Max Mirnyi (BLR) vs. Victor Hanescu (ROM) Vladimir Voltchkov (BLR) vs. Andrei Pavel (ROM) "I completely trust Victor Hanescu, who is a very experienced player," Pavel said of his teammate playing the opener against The Beast. "Now he is in good shape. I really feel it during our training sessions, where he constantly beats me. I hope that Hanescu will get a point in the first game. If he wins, it is going to be easier for me to play." Croatia at USA Surface: Hard outdoors Ivan Ljubicic (CRO) vs. Andre Agassi (USA) Mario Ancic (CRO) vs. Andy Roddick (USA) "We have respect for them," U.S. captain Patrick McEnroe said. "The guys have had a great week of practice and worked extremely hard. They basically have a two-man team, but a very good two-man team. To be able to win three points over three days is pretty difficult." DAILY TENNIS-X E-NEWSLETTER Read what tennis industry insiders read to get the latest news, insight and opinion on pro tennis. Serena outclasses them in the looks department. She looks better in a skimpy swimsuit than a swimsuit model, and plays tennis better than any other woman on the planet." So much for a marquee match-up that Fed Cup fans have been waiting for years."...And here's Matt Cronin of Tennisreporters.net bringing the hammer down on some of the competition: "Speaking of web sites, it was funny to see tennisweek.com try to re-break the Johnny Mac commentating for ESPN story this morning. Guys, if you didn't break the story, there's no reason to call a spokesman and say he/she 'told tennisweek probably, uh, yes.' ESPN itself had already had the story on its web site for hours (as did we). Best to put up more of Rich Pagliaro's insightful interviews and fewer "breaking" stories on hotels offering Paris packages...While we are getting ourselves in hot water, a number of you have asked us to comment on Peter Bodo's new column on Tennis.com. We like Peter as a person, even though we strongly disagree with his take on whether real men hunt deer with rifles (they don't). His last book on tennis, "Courts of Babylon," is top five of all time. But the column? Some good, but a little much self-serving copy of Tennis Magazine. Why put up a column announcing you will be writing daily and then say you need another couple weeks to close an issue of the magazine and won't be filing daily? Doing exactly what? Re-writing captions on how to hit an overhead with your feet stuck in cement like Brenda Schultz? Re-hashing wire and web site copy for the front of the book?" -- Wow, hammertime, Cronin gets voted co-president of the International Tennis Writers Association and then starts swinging the hammer...Serena Williams in Dubai: "It's getting used to this court and the balls, and each day I get better. I think it's going to come soon, but I'm not worried about not being No. 1 -- people assume that I am anyway." Serena may be ranked No. 2, but her ego is always No. 1...See if you can find the error in this Thursday Reuters headline: "Injured top players key in Spain v France tie"...Spanish D-Cup captain Jordi Arrese after the ITF refused their request to re-lay the carpet surface at the Slovak Republic: "If it is in our interests, next time we are the hosts we will play the tie on the beach at Luanco because after what has happened here that is what I hope we can do. The surface at the International Tennis Centre (in Bratislava) is nothing like a hardcourt. No one plays on a surface like this anywhere."...In their doubles against Romania, Belarus will pair Max "The Beast" Mirnyi with 17-year-old Aliaksandr Bury in his D-Cup debut. |
